When I was a little tacker putting shoes on the table was 'bad luck' (pre- an understanding of micro-organisms)

I remember finding out the origin of 'three on a match' - apparently during the 1st World War - a soldier lighting fellows cigarettes at night: the first gives the enemy focus, the second steadies, and the third aims - and FIRES!
