Do you like chick lit? Or do you love it? Or abhor it like hell?

Who's your favorite chick-lit author and the most cherished work of this genre?
And why, of course?

The question is particularly targeted at the ladies out here but gents are always welcome to share their own views.

I'm not exactly sure what qualifies as "chick-lit". Do you mean female authors, or romance novels, or is it something else?
I'm guessing you mean romance novels. If that's true then this chick gives it a big thumbs down. If you mean books written by women then I'm all for it.

He probably means Nora Roberts-like stuff, books you often see on a rack at the grocery store. My mom has read thousands. They entertain, they serve their purpose.

I enjoyed the film The Joy Luck Club very much, so I read the book, and it was very good also. I've also read and greatly enjoyed the first three books of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. Had to read those at home, though, because the covers were way too girly for me to take them out in public.

I read a Jackie Collins novel as a kid. I really liked it then, then I found other stuff to pacify myself.

Romance novels is a totally different genre. Chick lit is genre fiction which addresses issues of modern womanhood, often humorously and lightheartedly.
As per wiki, "Although it sometimes includes romantic elements, chick lit is generally not considered a direct subcategory of the romance novel genre, because the heroine's relationship with her family or friends is often just as important as her romantic relationships."

Books by women authors deserve a thumbs up from my side too. You are free to quote them in the thread posts.

Not Nora Roberts! She comes under the "romance-class". Would resemble more of Marian Keyes or Helen Fielding or Jane Green or Anuja Chauhan.
The grocery thingie was kinda lame.

Jackie Collins and Amy Tan... Do they qualify for chick lit?

It accounts for over half of all book sales, or something like that. Crazy...

I know I'm going to sound like a candidate who should read chick lit when I ask this but what exactly is chick lit? I've heard of Nora Roberts and years ago I read a Jackie Collins book but are we just targeting female authors or something? Aren't Austen and Bronte the chick lit writers of their day?

Probably, actually. Chick Lit would simply be works written (mostly) by women, targeted to women, about woman things.

So we're merely bookbashing female authors then?

I don't see any bashing going on.

Are male authors who write about "male things" targeted at males called "dick lit?" I guess Fight Club would qualify, but I like that book. Do men feel uncomfortable reading chick lit? Should we feel uncomfortable reading dick lit?
