I've been trying to remember the name of a book I read several years ago. But I can't for the life of me remember it's name. I thought it was called 'Johnny Z' but that doesn't show up anything on google or amazon or any of the other websites I've tried. I've sumerised it below. If you know it please tell me, I would really like to read it again because I seriously enjoyed it.

The book who's name I can't remember is a humourous science fiction. I know that it has a sequel.
Earth has flooded and the world is very misty and cloudy, people live on floating cities.
The protagonist is a young boy who's parents are both dead, I think his last name was just one letter (e.g. Z) He gets bullied.
The other inhabitants on the galaxy send Earth and message every year asking them to come join their community. I think they drop the message down the prime minister's chimmney.
The aliens send a message saying they want to pick one of five human children to basicly help save the universe.
The government agrees to this and the world leader plus the 5 kids (the protagonist included) take off in a space rocket. Once they reach the orbit of the moon they get picked up by as fedora shaped space ship and head off to the the space station where the selection will take place.
The person in charge looks a bit like a kangaroo I think. The protagonist is put into a group with tree others (may have been 5). One is multicoloured and furry, one is quite big and has three arms and I remember there was a girl aswell.
They navigate the station via a series of wormhole like discs which you jump through. The selection process is a series of challenge. I remember one was where they had to have a relay flying race through an asteroid, but the asteroid wasn't real I think... The other was a sword fight with special swords that take about 800 years to make and involve being passed through the heart of a star.
There's doors that require the password 'shaushages' to open.
Eventually after a the challenges are finished and the protagonists team has won and his bully's team is disqualified for cheating theres a party and the world leader has a heart attack and 'dies' only to be microwaved and brough back to life. Or something along those lines.
The protagonist takes the world leader back home and has to confront the stand-in leader who's been all evil and taken over the world of sorts. The real world leader gets stabbed and the protagonist has a sword fight and triumphs over the evil guy.
He then places two wormhole disc-thingys in space to try to save the earth from destruction because the groups space ship has to reach super-speeds to get whereever they were going.
He then goes back and gets on said space ship and they fly off and don't destroy the earth on the way.
Theres also telepathy and telekenesis and terrible fashion sense because the aliens were messing with the humans for a while durring the 20th century. Like poka-dot covered flying starfish which are used by the military I think.
It's also revealed that the protagonist's parents were the only humans who were friends with the aliens/knew the aliens (can't remember which) and that they died in a crash of some sort.
And the aliens use a word called 'laft' which the protagonist thinks used to be 'love'. Theres a diving board type thing in the dueling room (where they practised with the swords for the challenge) which the further along it you walk the more your worst fear feels real. Only people with great 'inner laft' can make it to the end.
The protagonist sneaks in one night and walks the entire length and falls off the end where he meets his mum and dad. They talk for a while then he goes back to bed.
I think thats almost all I can remember about the book without going into extreme detail which isn't needed.
