Mama had always said,
“One day you’ll get it,
Why you must obey me.”
Mumbling, grumbling, griping,
I find myself doing her job,
Washing her dishes, running her errands.
I’m meant to do as she says,
Hanging off her every word.
A subservient ant to an unseen queen.
I hop to every command,
Each more inconvenient than the last,
And I’m bitter and annoyed and…
Years later. I look down into the eyes
Of that little old woman who treated me so,
Grateful for the chance to obey her every word.
