The Scarlet Letter is all about symbols and signs. All of the descriptions are necessary because it shows us, the readers, what we need to know. Nathaniel Hawthorne writes the way he does so we will see exactly how things were back then in Salem. It may be overwhelming for you but it is quite important to understand how life was and why it was that way.

This is important because the more words they write the more money they get. But honestly all that description is written to explain a deeper meaning. The explanation of the rose bush, is symbolic of Pearl. Pretty much, its there for a larger meaning of the whole theme in general. HOpe that helps :)

it's thick and wordy because that's how people wrote back then. but if you were to condense it down to like 5 chapters, the book would lose all it's meaning and depth.

I believe this novel pretty much sucked also because of the fact that it was just too wordy. Yes, its better to be descriptive rather than not but too be way too descriptive is just too annoying and tiring. We don't need a million adjectives of every single character in the novel..thanks.
I kinda find that this book would be interesting if it were shortened to about 4 or 5 chapters. The over done descriptions and the old enlish are very annoying. Can sombody explain to me why this is important to have it so overwelming if it is important?
