it was the short story "Endicot's Cross" or something with "Endicot" (a guy) that Hawthorne's followers think is the begginings. <br> Any ideas out there whether the manuscript was real or not. I think it was simply because the man integrates the idea of his story being a manuscript so well into his story. Like with Pearl in the forest, and with the limeted narrator. Look at the lines with Hibbins he will say things like "It was rumored" that Mistress Hibbins talked to DImmedale during the scaffold scene. <br> The book is truly great.
