I myself wondered the same thing. Though I had no desire to actually see the movie, its release, paired with having recently read "War of the Worlds" made me curious about the books, as "War of the Worlds" got me thinking on the subject of other classical sci-fi works.
I have the first of the Tarzan books, but have not yet read it.

Okay, I am kinda jealous, as I would love just to have more books and Tarzan is on my reading list... If you ever get a chance to read it, tell me how it was and whether it's worth the time or not. I heard the John Carter movie was ridiculous, but it's release stirred some notions that it must have been a great book series if someone wanted to make a movie out of it? :P

I hve read all of the John Carter of Mars stories and all of the Carson Napier on Venus stories and most of the Pellucidor stories. I spent my youth well. They are all the same plot, and I understand the the Trzan stories are also the same. Burroughs managed to make most of the stories interesting through hod wild incidents and descriptions. The Mars stories seemed a bit duller than the Venus stories; it may have been the boring landscape and four armed people. If you feel like reading some light fiction, then go for it. Some of the stories reflect on the period when they were written.

The first couple of Tarzan novels are good fun (especially the first), as were the first couple of Weissmuller movies. The 1930s radio serial Tarzan and the Diamond of Asher (39 12-minute episodes) was surprisingly very, very good (the follow-up, Tarzan and the Fires of Tohr, is okay but not great).
Burne Hogarth adapted roughly the first half of the first Tarzan book in graphic novel form, which was published as a hardcover in the '70s (I think). He's an amazing artist, and I loved this book when I was a kid.

Before the new John Carter movie came out, Edgar Rice Burroughs was an author i was only vaguely aware in the way of recognizing a name when you hear it but not knowing anything of the person's work. It sounds like interesting, fun, and quick reading though. I'd love to hear some more opinions on it.

Maybe for those of us who are interested we should start our own Edgar Rice Burrough's discussion group.

You would have to open a thread for the discussion of his works. If you go down to the Authors List, there is a forum created for him:
http://www.online-literature.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=114
If you go there you could start a thread for discussing his works, or said up independent threads for The Martian Tales, and Tarzan.
