Certain stinks I don't much mind
Like ocean breeze
And rotten seaweed if there must
Horse poo's alright
Intense, but I can live with it on
Long country walks
Where other vegetable matter rots
In the green grass
And the stinks of petrol on a farm
Or sweat on a ride
Musty old houses have their stinks
Unique to themself
And though I probably would miss it
Of cabbage boiling
Needs to cook with something else
To disguise its stink
I'm not into old socks, hair burning
Most burning things
Aren't on the list - not even incense
Which is meant to be
They tell me, though I can disagree
Burning rubber another
Most things just shouldn't be burnt
.

I like the stink examples you gave MM (and agree!). I think this would be better in rhyme. I also wonder why you end on the point about burning things?

I've enrolled in a short course Delta, and unfortunately it's situated on a main road. This is an area which if it weren't for wanting a Certificate For A Decent Job When Times Get Tough I'd never visit in any lifetime. The building itself is surrounded by fooderies. At lunch time there are:
1 Dominoes Pizza
2 Hungry Jacks
3 MacDonalds
4 Yiros (Gyro)
5 Golden Chicken
6 Chinese
7 Thai
8 Indian
9 French
10 Mexican
to choose from, without having to cross the road. If you do choose to cross there are even more which I haven't investigated, as well as a Target, Coles and Woolworths.
But then there are the factories and lorries and buses which mean you have to make a hold-your-breath run back to the school before suffocating from the burning miasma.
So it began as a desire to be anywhere else, and ended with a vow.

Years ago I lived for a short time in a relatively large city (well, certainly bigger than anywhere I'd lived before or since.) The only place we could afford at the time was a roach-infested apartment building, so bad that the kitchen floor was gray, not by design but by decades of built-up wax. It was really dreadful.
But the one thing I remember about it was entering the building and walking up four flights of stairs. On every floor there was a different ethnic food cooking and by the time we reached the top floor where our lousy apartment was the warring smells had combined. As you can imagine, it was not especially pleasant.

Wow MM. That's an interesting story in itself! Are you sure you're not in Oz?

Wow, I like this poem. It is simple to read and each line rolls off the tongue even though it doesn't rhyme. Good job :wink5:

A pleasure to read as always. The examples you mentioned are interesting and I'd like to add- the smell of very old books. The musty odor of a book with pages yellowed may trigger a fit of sneezing but I like it. There is something so reassuring about it.

I've not refreshed this page for barely a few days and --- it already stinks!!? :)
And you talk to someone (me) who suffers from a highly developed (overdeveloped!) sense of smell! I couldn't take most of what's on your list, except for ocean breeze, I'm afraid. And, your writing being so evocative, I had to go through most of your poem with my fingers clipped on my nose! :lurk5:!!! Just know that one of the smells I REALLY can't stand is popcorn in the movies!!!!! - I almost prefer wet socks, as folk take off their shoes in a plane. Go and smell your fall, MM!!!! I guess this is what it is now over there, isn't it?

Thankyou Alien Girl :)
I don't think musty books really qualify as a stink, and are certainly preferable to many things (I almost thought you were going to say burning books - that would stink!)

I don't mind the smell of popcorn - hot butter yum!
The line you referred to was actually one continuous thought: ocean breeze but with rotting seaweed. That's what I meant, but interpretation's valid :)
