I don't really know why I still have this one. When I first came here I found it fit me cause its a very sad girl. then for some reason I lost it and for a while I had the moon but then I found it again and it still fit me. it really doesn't anymore, I'm not a sad girl but I just like it and can't imagine my name here on lit net without it.

Yes, it's me. I'm self involved and probably overly ambitious. There are bits of color in the picture, in the glasses and my lips. The rest has been removed or blocked. :)

There's a bit of a drawn out story behind mine. A friend and fellow teacher who posted on one of the art sites I frequented used the image of the vicious Roman Emperor, Caracalla, as his avatar:

http://www.laits.utexas.edu/moore/sites/laits.utexas.edu.moore/files/images/0003140005_1024.preview.jpg

His personality was anything but similar to Caracalla and I loved the irony of his putting forth this image as his on-line personae.

Around the same time I was using the lovely portrait of Susanna Fourment (the artist's Sister-in-Law) by Rubens.

http://jerryandmartha.com/yourdailyart/images/rubens-susannafourment.jpg

As a result of this avatar, I had any number of members here (and elsewhere) assume that I was female.

I decided to change to a male avatar, and quite liked the way the classical sculptures read when shrunk down. I stumbled upon Antinoös, the pretty boy of the Roman Emperor, Hadrian, and I couldn't help but laugh... recognizing that Antinoös is about as far from me as Caracalla was from my friend.

I change my avatar as the mood takes me. I liked this fellow as soon as I saw him but I was told later that a sock puppet is actually a member of a forum that creates 'sock puppet' identities of themselves using different names, usually so they can praise their own work - but I assure you I'm not one of them! :biggrinjester:

Three reasons:

1. Proust is one of my favorite writers
2. His portrait by Jacques Emile Blanche is a painting I admire
3. The Musee D'Orsay moved it into storage before my trip to Paris and now I'll never get to see it.

I love your avatar St Lukes. And Varenne, yours is sexy, I remember I first thought it was of some film star. Mine is of Albert Camus and is from the cover of a biography of his I read last summer.

I chose it partly because Camus is among my top favourite writers, but mostly because I just really fancy the expression on his face. I don't like the cigarette though, as I'm trying to quit. In almost every photograph taken of him as a man he has a cig hanging out of his mouth.

Hi qimissung I grew up hearing of Cossette and Les Miserables.
I got taken to the musical in London to see Les Miserables and I still don't remember a thing of it.
I remember Buddy Holly though much more flamboyant in style.

Some of my avatars along my residence here have been picked by stephofthenight; a sort of friendly ritual between us along the years, picking each other's avatars. Other than that, when it comes to my own choice I recurrently set for Shiryu from the anime Saint Seiya. It's him most of the times, mainly because I always wanted to wear an angry long dark mane, and because I somehow identify myself with dragons.

I think that too. Maybe it's because it must reflect a part of the person's character and personality as they chose the avatar for a reason. Although I don't know what mine really says about me. Maybe that can be another topic - what does your avatar say about you?

Being a hiuge comic book fan when I was young I had three favorites all from DC, Batman, Adam Strange and Blackhawk. The Bat of course is very well known and Adam doesn't really have an identifiable symbol but Blackhawk fit perfetcly as a homage to a beloved hero when I was young and to the irony that I had a military career later. When I first laid eyes on an issue #143 I thought they were POLICEMEN -being chaed by a giant dinosaur. Heady times for a 10 year 50 years gone now. I cannot belive its been that long.
