She probably smelled of heavy perfume
to disguise her body odor
because people didn't bathe that often in those days.

She probably had hairy armpits
and let's face it: she had hairy legs.
Her skin probably felt like parchment.
She wasn't beautiful by any means;
it's debatable if she was even halfway attractive.

And yet there remains that smile
and it redeems everything.

Wow. Twenty-first realism taking a second look at the painting people make a big show
out of swooning over. YET-- that "redeeming" last line rings so true, and adds to the
mystery of that work of art which has fascinated people for centuries.

One of the more bizarre and humorous theories concerning who Mona Lisa really was is the one that declares that she was one of Da Vinci's boyfriends dressed in drag.

It's interesting to me that one line can oftentimes "make or break" a poem.

Meh. Another case of prose with line breaks to make it look like a poem.
