Dear Mum

I got tired of reading
the same line from the menu.
Tonight's special isn't me.
Today it's a hot sticky sauce pudding
while Dad got his just desserts
from a Tesco Express.

I'm gonna light up a Lucky Strike
and cough my odds into the air.
Tell me, when was your time?
That time when your kettle whistled
to the boil?

See, I think I'm in touch with
those mysteries you used to stash
on the top shelf of the pantry.
I'm ready to eat packets of them
and watch endless re-runs
of Morcambe & Wise now.

I know how the last straws
are kissed away from our naked bodies.
If we knew love in our minds,
would we ever have explored
the dimly lit alleyways of our hearts
the way that we did?

Must second Bar's appreciation of that wonderful last stanza!

(Speaking of re-runs, wasn't there an Australian sit-com about a man's relationship with his mother? "Mother" was in the title, I think, and I thought it marvelously funny.)

It was called Mother & Son and was very funny for its time. The actress Ruth Cracknell who played his dotty, yet sly mother has since passed away.

Glad you liked the poem Prince.

Wow that last stanza was incredible. Then I looked around and saw that everyone thought the same thing so now I don't feel like I'm the only one who thinks it's special. Good job.

A family of addicts? The "dimly lit alleyways of our hearts"...do you really want to go there?
