I need to do an essay for Literature, but I am struggling to understand the essay question. It has to be 1500 words

The question is:

How does social realties and subject positions, influence, determine, enable interpretation of your chosen piece.

I don't understand what it means by social realties and subject positions

I am doing my essay on one of Ezra Pound's poems

-In a Station of the Metro (1913)
The apparition of these faces in the crowd ;
Petals on a wet, black bough.

Explanation of the task:
This essay requires the same interpretive skills required for the first assessment (was an interpretive essay), but emphasises the task of explaining your position or accommodating your view to other critical (scholarly) opinions. The focus in this case is on research and critical thinking. Thus you will need to develop your position in light of the research you make. You should then formulate an argument based on this research and your position as this is modified or formed by that research.

Marking Criteria:
• Coherence and persuasiveness of argument
• Clarity of expression and coherence in terms of essay structure
• Relevant deployment of secondary source material
• Engagement with the relevant issues raised by the question
• Evidence of reading and engagement with the texts discussed

1500 words on a 14-word picture-poem? Are you sure that's the kind of subject your professor had in mind?

If you have questions on the question, never mind the answer, to the instructor is probably the first place you should go.

I once wrote a +1500 word essay on William's "This is just to say" - only slightly longer.

Most of your essay will be based on research. Start researching the poem and a bit of life in Paris in 1912 and this will make more sense. Reading the Wikipedia article on the poem might be a helpful start.

(Note: the following is how I interpret the question, you might do better to take the above advice and ask your professor)

Social reality = what was happening (in Paris, 1912) that relates to this poem
Subject position = how Pound frames his subjects, how he depicts them.
