I must state, in the most straightforward manner possible, that your comment was absolutely infuriating. I understand you have never read any other works by Miss Austen. You may have a misunderstanding of her characters and ideas, which transcend any barrier of time and cultural differences. Miss Austen is, through her book contemplating and exploring the follies of human character, which can be applied to today. As an avid reader and fan of Austen and other classics, I have been much offended by your comments. As for those who believe classics are only for boring old people, I am a teenager who also enjoys popular culture. Perhaps you should consider the fact that in a patrarchial society of when the literary "cannons" were compiled, Miss Austen's book was added to the list by a group of highly intelligent males who clearly believed her work to be in the same calibre as those by males, hence contradicting your comment of Miss Austen's book only suitable for females. I remind you that Austen's genteel, argrarian society did not account for an audience of working-readers, but only those whom you class as "snobs", as only those who were educated and therefor wealthy could read. The novel moves at a slow pace as the lifestyle of regency England was one that allowed for intricacies of details which may not be achieved if the plot moved at a quicker pace. I ask you not to embrace the characters of Pride and Prejudice and their lifestyle, but merely to consider what it is they represent and why the novel is still loved today.
