Hi,
I am trying to find the name of a book.
I believe it is the first of a series (at least 2 books).
It starts of in Birmingham, England in the 1870's, and a youg boy (a cobblers son) joins the 24th Regiment of foot (Warwickshire Regiment). He eventualy becomes a Sgt Major, after serving in many different parts of the world.
He also meets several important historical characters aswell (Teddy Roosevelt is one).
While in Africa as a younger man he has an affair with a rich, titled lady. Her husband is an unpleasent man called Captain Bland, of I believe the Royal Green Jackets. She has a child, and brings him up as her own.
As a Sgt and after the affair (he does not know that he has a son with the Lady), he marries a girl he has known for many years. They have children.
Near the end, I belive in the Boar War in south Africa, he meets a young Cavalry Officer briefly. It is his unknown son. Neither of them know each other.
At the end he is forced to retire, due to age and returns to England to find that his wife is now much more indipendent, and has taken over the running of a shoe shop. He joins her there, with a heavy heart.
The book ends, but I believe tells you it will continue till the First Worl War.
This is a GREAT BOOK!, and it is driving me mad trying to remember the name!!
