What are your thoughts on "reading" books on CD? I spend lots of time in the car, and I just don't get as much time to "sit down and read" a book. Do you consider listening to a book as "reading" that book?

I think hearing a book read is better than silently reading it. If it were a play, I would prefer also seeing the play performed rather than reading it. However, most of the time it is faster to read the book since it is easier to skim.

I think literature is meant to be heard. Long before the Iliad or the Odyssey or the Vedas were ever written down they were transmitted orally. When I'm by myself I read out loud. Anything I put any effort into writing I always read out loud when revising. Reading poetry aloud adds a whole other dimension to it and the right kind of woman will be very impressed if reading poetry to her is your idea of fun.
Its funny you start this thread because the only actual book I've ever listened to on audiotape is your favorite, Les Miserables. I've listened to a lot of poetry recordings though. Recordings of Ezra Pound are really something to hear.

Well, one HAS to read the works of Robert Burns aloud.
