Happy Valentine's day everybody.

(Though all my cards appear to have got lost in the post....again.)

Ahh Valentine's Day, being single on this date is like standing alone at a dance.

Yes, once again it seems that all of the cards that were sent to me were lost in the post as I have received not a single one. Damn the Royal Mail!

I'm so ronery!

Looking for a valentine. Is Nelly the sheepdog still up for grabs?

Yesterday I bumped into one of my neighbours, a young man in his twenties, who was carrying a large bunch of flowers. He said he'd bought them for his fiancee, a pretty blond girl who lives in the same house; he'd also bought various items of food that he said he was going to cook for her. Until then, I had completely forgotten about Valentine's day as it's a thing of the past with me. At least, I thought it was until I received one from New York this morning; some women have very long memories.

Luckily, I have managed to escape the stresses and strains of buying cards for this particular unholy event, this time. Mrs Neely threatened me the other day about not buying one (I said "what - you want a card? We are not twelve"). However, it works out that she hasn't got me one so I am in the clear. Going for a meal at a quiet Italian but it is purely coincidental that it is this Valentine thing.

Looking at some items concerning Valentine's cards, I came across this little number.
It appears that the card is up for auction at £8000 even though it's hardly a billet doux a la Madame de Sévigné. I wonder what he's thinking of? The mind simply boggles.

A Valentine’s card which Princess Diana sent to a lonely footman. Addressed simply ‘To George’, this hand-written Valentine’s Day card from Princess Diana is not quite the romantic mystery it might at first appear, however.
The Daily Mail can reveal that the recipient was none other than George Smith, the royal valet who caused a scandal when he claimed to have been raped by a member of Prince Charles’s household.

I actually just returned from a wedding ceremony tonight. :D Was told the couples had booked the marriage hall six months in advance because there was a huge chance of unavailability of space because of Valentine's Day! :) Oh and the couple had paid twice as much than any ordinary day when they could have had the ceremony any other day more economically. Personally speaking I found it rather ridiculous and a waste of money but then I am the kind of person who personally finds many things other people take huge pride in a waste of money as well! :D but I still respect their choice because I guess we are all different and their money is their business.

Haha, we had a a 'romantic' very tough steak and self-made chips at home with admitedly good mayo from Luxembourg. That is all. No cards, no flowers, no chocolates. I never get any, but we do go for meals quite regularly...

Oh, but my hubby got a card from a student of his, plus chocolate. Ahhh. And he made one cry in his class as the question was asked what was the best thing you could give your wife/partner for valantine. And he said 'time'. Aah, daft sod, I WANT A CARD AND FLOWERS! But then I get stuff out of the blue sometimes...

To all those who felt alone: :grouphug:

Oh, and last night at about seven I saw one hesitating young man at the big Valentine flower display in the super market. Must...buy...girlfriend...something...

Mine was pretty sweet, I get presents (and I looooove presents). Then we ate prime rib, and we were going to go out into the woods to start a fire and read some Dashiell Hammett stories but it was too cold.

I got an e-mail from someone I really like who said some sweet things. Sometimes I think I'm coated in layers of cobwebs after being single for so long but maybe not...

Valentine's Day is a such a bull**** holiday. Just a corporate created day so they can sell more flowers, candy, and diamonds. You know child slaves in Africa lose limbs and die mining those diamonds you so cavalierly wear around you neck and fingers? How does that make you fell, hmm? HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

Nothing MM. I have never owned or bought a diamond. I presume everything you consume and do in your daily life is 100% friendly to the earth and the third world then?

When you cast the first stone (making sure it isn't a blood diamond) make sure you're not one of millions of thoughtless, western consumerist culprits will you?

1. It was a joke, Delta.
2. It wasn't directed only at you (I would have quoted or addressed you if that was my intent).
3. Lighten up a little, will you?

Well, there is not much romance in forced romance and overt consumerism.

Sucks getting dumped before Valentines Day.

Seriously, I picked up some chocolate-covered raspberries, strawberries, and Twinkies at the big chocolatier (Malley's) here in town, then we went out to dinner in a quiet small diner in town and had steak and shrimp, and then went home and watched a movie (Coppola's Dracula). We'll do something special on the weekend... perhaps a concert.

So me and Ade were driving back from a job yesterday, and we saw a stall selling flowers in a lay-by.

"Shall we stop?"
"Naw, the only flours I get the Missus are plain and self raising." (that was Ade.)
We drove on.
When I got home Mrs P had baked me an apple pie with hearts on it.
Mrs Ade had got him a card and a bottle of whisky.
At least we had the decency to feel a little bit guilty today.

The apple pie with hearts on it shows that romance isn't dead, but I can't help thinking that Ade got the better of the deal.

The current romantic interest and I just did lunch, I was busy in the afternoon. He wants to go see Swan Lake, but it costs a ****ing fortune.

It snowed. The county's snow plows don't come up to this elevation, so I was pretty well stuck at home. I did have a lovely Orson Welles quote bestowed on me...

" …I suppose most of us are lonely in this big world, but we must fall tremendously in love to find it out. The cure is the discovery of our need for company — I mean company in the very special sense we’ve come to understand since we happened to each other — you and I. The pleasures of human experience are emptied away without that companionship —now that I’ve known it; without it joy is just as unendurable as sorrow. You are my life — my very life. Never imagine your hope approximates what you are to me. I love you, that’s all there is to it."
