Hello everyone,

I am currently doing research for an existentialist novel in order to round off the characters and bring out the ramifications of the themes. If you could recommend any non fiction and fiction of any medium which deals with the following themes and character traits, that it would be a big help!

Religion vs science, spiritual crisis, suicide, extreme ugliness, free will/determinism, trial, social criticism, complexity of the world, mirrors, individualism, moral relativism.

I already know of Camus, Sartre, Kafka, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, St. Augustine, Dostoevsky, Schopenhauer, Orwell, Lukes.

I know it's a long list of themes but anything that represents well any of these themes is a gem to me right now!

Thanks a lot,

Laurence

Check out Victor Hugo's Notredam, it has many of the themes you specify.

Might not help much, but when you mentioned Sartre I immediately thought of Nausea. Remember what Roquentin saw in the library? This theme with its complexities are considered in Thomas Mann's Death in Venice and in Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita. Not one of the themes you mentioned, but it explores the complexities of life, individualism, freedom and other ideas of existentialism.

I don't understand existentialism and hate Sartre's novels.
