I see all these poetry contests here, but I don't know nearly enough about poetry to try entering them. I can do limericks, haiku, and cinquains (which this site taught me about) and have made occasional posts in the latter two threads, but that's about it.

I'm not looking for a deep education, just enough of an introduction to basic poetic forms that will allow me to create with minimal embarrassment (and know what I'm looking at when I read others' work). Book references welcome, but educational posts here would be even better.

Thanks!

Here's a few links I've crossed paths with in the past that might get you started:

Poetry forms http://www.poetrybase.info/forms/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Poetic_form

"Glossary of Poetic Terms" http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0903237.html

"A Guide to Verse Forms" http://volecentral.co.uk/vf/

Hope this helps.
