View Full Version : Today Was a Good Day

Today was a good day,
a day of celebration
underneath a blue etched with vapour trails
which made me long to fly.
In the distant meadow
tractors rolled the new mown hay
and rabbits grazed,
while pheasants basked in sun.
The dancing took me by surprise
when ceilidh rhythms ceased,
to be replaced by alien beats
and ululations at the wedding feast
inviting hips to sway.
Idi Amin the DJ spun fusion jive
while posing fingers played enticing games.
Farsi crossed with hip-hop
cries for tapping feet,
but though today was a good day,
the aeroplanes above
made me long to fly.
Your long legs weren't dancing on the floor
nor your willowy form.
I would gladly trade this day
to hold your hand, to taste your lips,
or know your breath upon my cheek.
It was to you I longed to fly.

Seems you had a nice time just a little short of being perfect. At first when you said "made me long to fly", I thought we are going to have another bird poem. But this is different, full of music and longing.

Oh how wonderfully this turned into a love poem, having been a happy, somewhat giddy one. But weren't her legs long enough to be at least a little foreshadowed?

is there really a DJ called Idi Amin? I enjoyed the blends of music throughout the poem and the imagery of the countryside that sprung to my mind and of course the last stanza which capped it off with a heartfelt 'awww'

Rare earnestness from our Ironist in Residence, but this one has heartfelt warmth and sweetness. Helps those of us having a veritable "slew" of very bad days by reminding us that not everyone is miserable, for that yours truly is grateful.

I find this one to be a well-formed sincere poem. Quite uplifting, even if your day was not exquisite.

Ripley: Thanks for reading. Definitely not a bird poem, at least not that kind of bird. ;) Wrote this months ago and forgot about it. I found it in my archive today and gave it a bit of a polish. As you can see, it's a summer poem.
Prince: Thanks for appreciating its developement. I've made some slight alterations so I hope you approve. As for the long legs, well, it depended where the light was coming from...
Delta: I'm sorry to say the DJ wasn't called Idi Amin, but he certainly looked like him! A Scottish chap married a Persian girl, it was a marvellous wedding and the music helped to make it so.
Auntie: Thanks for reading :) I'm particularly pleased to have been able to cheer you up, even if it was only a little.
B4B: Thanks to you too. Most happy to have given you a lift.
Again, thanks to all for gracing this poem with your kind words.

So vivid, I feel like doing some River Dance steps alongside. Then the ending, unexpected and enchanting, it's icing on the proverbial wedding cake :D

Thanks for reading Haunted, but the ceilidh music was Scottish and the Riverdance thing was more Irish. ;) Happy to have enchanted you, though. :D
