A chimpanzee in the trees
Swinging there so happily
When he falls and bumps his head
Mummy chimp sends him to bed
He gets back up and plays again
When stormy weather starts to rain
He slips off a branch and falls back down
But mummy chimp is not around
He calls for her and shouts for her
But she stays absent, not a word
The rain goes on, the chimp despairs
At the sodden ground he stares
Rain and tears merge on his chin
And now the darkness closes in
But hark, what's that, the faintest sound
Chimp looks frantically around
Its mummy chimp calling for him
Things no longer look so grim
He sees her finally through the trees
Reaches her, gives her a squeeze
He knows that soon he'll be alone
But for today he's going home.

What do you think?

Hey, not too shabby. It'd make a great children's poem. It's got a simple charm to it, and it seems to be doing something right with the language (say what you will about rhymes). Also, it makes this reader want to call his mom.

Thanks, I wrote it on an impulse a little while back when I first moved out of my mum's house aged 16. I'm 24 now and she still calls me her chimp, which can occasionally lead to embarrassment.

I agree. It is fun and makes a fun children's poem with it's delightful simplicity Sancho.

I agree with all the above and think you and MystyrMystyry would get along just fine. (BTW I hear 'No More Heroes' by the Stranglers every time I read your name)

Many thanks for all the comments. Here is another poem written more recently and in fitting with the theme of this site, it is still quite a childish poem, but where's the fun in growing up:

Books

When I take a look inside a book
I see a different place
A place where everything makes sense
A place that I can face

For those moments I am reading
I'm out among the stars
Exploring other kingdoms
Or living in the past

But books are not just fiction
And can help in other ways
Oftentimes they contain thoughts
You'll keep for all your days

Choose a book on yoga
On science or on cars
Not only will you be elsewhere
But you'll be learning fast

So if you have not done so
To the library you should go
Try a book, just pick one up
Where it might lead, you never know.

I must admit I like the chimp poem for its sheer fun however this poem has a positive message about books which I would endorse to any child (especially if they're glued to a computer!)

Many thanks for all your comments. I will be posting more of my stuff on my blog over the coming days and weeks and I would be interested to know what you think.
