View Full Version : An Ode to Hillwalker

Written word,
Scribbled down
Often absurd,
Fears the frown
Answers received,
Sometimes dismissed
Often assisting,
Key-clenching fist
Absence of lightness,
Upon our dreams
We lose rightness,
In torrential streams.
A little something I wrote for the absent Hillwalker. May he soon return!

He had to go. He was obstructing the revolution. Maybe one day we'll untie him. But until then buhbeepbop-duh-diddly-mao-hoh-zoo communism, long live the beep-doop.

True, Hill was part of the Anciene Regime, but that beepidy-boop crap has become so bourgeois lately. Behold the NEW LITERARY REVOLUTION!

I love how your signature is underneath everything you say. :D
(I kid)
It's a decent poem, and I most certainly like what it says. I hope he sees it and does the right thing (for us).

Scottish shores has a sage called Hill
he's so on the mark it gives me chills
generously he finds time to critique
but now he's sick with Litnet fatique
thanks to poo poo sukaddydoo
and nonsense verses worthy of a boo
lame azz rhymes he loves them not
and mine so vile like I just smoked pot
he will have no choice but comes right back
to tell me talents I seriously lack
and that's exactly what we want
or else his absence will forever Haunt

Bravely he fought the good fight
Proclaiming that rhyming's not right:
Would that bippity-bop
With its doo-doo, please, stop!
But that nonsense would not see the light.

I always found Hillwalker's comments to be helpful, fair, thoughtful and constructive. I really hope he feels he can return at some point soon.

Is he OK? I hope he is... He really enhanced my confidence to deal with English literature in a better way, so as not to be lost in the confusion of literary theories. I think he deserves a heroic epic.
Seriously, is he OK?

I'd like to thank everyone who has offered their support in raising words to bring Hillwalker back! It's very encouraging to see that he has helped so many, and that my own opinion is shared. And nice to see some creativity too. Hillwalker would have liked that.
For those who are wondering where he went, or if he's okay... Well, in an attempt to be diplomatic about the affair, I believe he allegedly left the forums due to incredible stress. There were some words thrown around, and a rather escalating drama around his constructive critique methods.
Regardless of the reason, it seems as if he needs a break, although he may not return at all. I, for one, feel that his absence on Litnet is a very serious one, and that he has contributed much to this community. And, I hope he is okay.

Dear Smerdyakov
Great accent, but Hill is a Welshman living in Scotland. (bach !) Still of the Celtic breed though!
Best wishes

Haha. Litnet is such a blip on his radar. Incredible stress? If you ever interacted with him, you could tell he's the kind of guy who's smart enough to fill out his own day and not think twice about this place. It seems he just got sick of all the wolf droppings and decided, with good reason, that it wasn't worth his time anymore to log on here and take abuse like that.
Don't think for a second he's crying in a corner for himself, dying to come back, kept away against his will. He probably learned a few new jokes about stupid Americans and got on with his life. Probably drinking warm beer, for that matter. Yech.

Actually, patent lie. We tied him up because he was against the revolution. But now that there are at least two new revolutions... well, everyone started their own revolution. And we forgot about him. We accidentally left him tied up in the basement of the Dakota building, next to several copies of Catcher in the Rye and the unsold surplus of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy and the other footage from the Kennedy thing we don't talk about.
Somebody go 'round and cut him loose, next time you're near Strawberry Fields.

Fair enough.
I've not been around long enough to know much of the situation, I only know that much of the time, HW was the only one to take the time to read, and constructively critique a lot of work here, and from what I have seen, what he had to say sometimes was gutsy, but honest, and never meant to be spiteful. :)

Yep. The place is worse off without him, for sure.

I didn't say it before, BookBeauty, but it's really good of you to do this in his behalf. I'm sure he is fine, but he also certainly didn't deserve the mean-spiritedness he got at the hands of certain people because he refused to be anything less than rigorous and honorable in expressing his opinions about our work.

JuniperWoolfHe was also on the short story forums. He gave my own work a good tearing into a few times, which I greatly appreciated. :)
Thank you, gimissung. I just felt that if he's going to part ways with these forums, to show that the time he took was appreciated by many. A little gift, so to speak. And, I agree with you. He was dealt cards that were unfair to him, and his efforts to help us with our work.

Regarding Hillwalker,
I've had some disagreements with him before in regard to tact or certain opinions for that matter; however I never thought of Hillwalker as anything less than sincere. His honesty is like a refreshment on a warm summer day, something rare to find these days. Also he's well versed in poetry, as by his critiques. The only issue I had with him was he should know poets or anyone artistic tend to be sensitive. Not just anyone can write even crappy poetry; we are a select breed lol. His approach could be a bit more subtle, but that's water under the bridge. I hope he comes back. His dedication is unrivaled.

I agree.
I don't workshop the stuff I write so I have never had to deal with any critique from Hillwalker or anyone else. I figure I wouldn't listen to a critique anyway, so why waste anyone's time? But it is good to have people with different personalities and viewpoints post in these forums especially if you like writing about people.
I would probably disagree with Hillwalker's distaste for rhyme. I love it, even when it's crappy, along with meter and alliteration. I've even enjoyed some of the nonsense that WolfLarson has posted--at least in small doses--along with Hillwalker's condemnation of it.

Agreed! I was amazed by his willingness to give a constructive review of almost all the works that are posted here. Surely it took him some time and it is hard to believe that he gave so much of his valuable time just out of spite. He was a dedicated and honest critic and I wish he would return soon!

Hill was here last night for a while, but he's avoiding commenting on this particular thread. Probably he's embarassed.
I mean imagine someone writing a public ode to you - how would you respond?
There's a distinction about him in that he's both a critic and sensitive artiste ;) How should he take the nods? Most artists want to be remembered for their art, not their criticism, however much it may be appreciated.
Think about it: a thread about a person who's a Litnet member just like you, and everyone's acting like he's just been given a burial at sea or something.
Poor bastard can't cop a trick this week.

Hill commented on my very first post , he has been a yardstick to me ever since, he has been a most important member of here since I landed, respected for his criticism as much as his praise and his willingness and bravery to offer both. Hill, get your knobbly knees back here, my man.

I haven't been active here at all lately so I have absolutely no idea as to what's going on here. But when I read this I was a little shocked....and sad. I have learned so much from him (and from all those who have taken time to comment on my stories) and I would really hate it if I don't get a share of his wisdom again. From what I have understood, some people have been really ungrateful.
But what I can also see is that a lot of people really respect him and really do need him. Hill, if you are reading this, please come back.

May he forever rest in piece, torn to shreds by a pack of inbred Wolfs. Hurts the IQ, that kind of inbreeding.
Seriously, he hasn't been here for a year. What a legacy. They still whisper his name in the hallways of Hogwarts: "Voldemort."

Hill commented on my first poetry posts and gave me memorable and encouraging advice. I can't say I ever exchanged much information with him apart from 1 or 2 replies, yet somehow he made an impression on me and stayed in my memory.
Every time I think to rhyme, I feel a cold friendly shadow whisper in my ear 'Don't do that lame trick'.

Two replies only? There was a month when Hill critiqued my short stories everyday. Patient. Helpful. But honestly harsh--which I liked.

Disregard that advice when you're writing a sonnet, a rondeau, heroic couplets, a villanelle, or any kind of verse form that requires end rhyme. (Just follow the procedure about meter and stresses, and your rhymes will less likely to be "lame.")
