''I found the white marble!'' said the voice.
''It really isn't the time Rico!...'' replied Jacoby.
''We are to hurry to the studio before it closes''.
''Lady Ravel won't be very happy''.
''You know what she said this time: I insist you too are here promptly!".
''So let's not disappoint us.''
Jacoby was pressing ahead, walking as fast as he could. He was deeply gone into his thoughts.
''I said I found the marble....you know that one I mean... in fact this is the one..!! look...and there is only THE one we know of!'' insisted Rico again.
The voice was peaky, blunt, cutting through the air like a sharp hand tapping against the wind to tame it into place. It fluctuated across the alleyway like a storm about to blow.
Rico often took piano singing lessons. He knew far too well to how hit a note using intonation and voice, making an accute single E bounce off a piano key.
Jacoby was pressing even faster. This time he was getting annoyed.
Rico was steadily following behind. His footsteps were dragging on the floor pavement, something he did when something was up.
''I am not having this again Rico!!'' spoke loudly Jacoby.
''I have told you before!!''.
''We have to be at Mr Bromovitch 's studio within the next five minutes''.
''Lady Ravel said the case will be ready to be picked up just before Mr Bromovitch goes off to his afternoon Jam session ''.
''It is now ten minutes since we have left Lady Ravel's house''.
''We don't have time to mess''.
''Do we want this or not?!''
''It is nearly four!''
Time was ticking. The clock in Senta Square could be heard for miles.
Jacoby knew too well this is to be done and on time if Lady Ravel was to keep her promise.
He knew Lady Ravel was terribly fussy.
She had already send them on a mission once.
She was not terribly impressed then.
The first time she send them to take a letter to Mr Ripon, the musician who lived across the Square Sention Lazare they got there two minutes too early to deliver it which did not please Mr Ripon.
When Lady Ravel found out about it she said:
''Time is precision and arriving to people's appointment too early or too late is bad manners''.
''Keep that in mind and remember not to do it again.''
Jacoy was not to forget that easily.
Lady Ravel always appeared strict but there was an expression, an air about her that always made Jacoby and Rico feel comfortable in her company.
After all their parents would not confide them to attend with little tasks for Lady Ravel if they did not believe she was perfectly suitable and svelt in her attitude and ideas to make them both feel helpfull and more then capable.
Jacoby checked his watch again.
It was nearer time and they were to be back by four twenty.
If and when everything goes to plan Jacoby and Rico would receive the reward lady Ravel promised them.
Nothing feels better then keeping a promise and receiving one back.
Few seconds lapsed, the afternoon was slipping away quickly and Mr Bromovitch's studio was just around the corner.
''Let's not drag about anymore Rico !!'' startled Jacoby.
''We are nearly there''.
He was walking so fast his footsteps could almost touch air he would fly.
''I said I found the white marble!'' replied the little voice.
This time the tone was swift but slightely egdy.
''For the third time will you stop and pay attention!''
Jacoby ingored him and carried on walking faster almost running.
''Ja!co!by!!''
shouted Rico with an almost authauritarian voice this time.
''Will you now stop running..look! here! it is the gem..I found it...no! it came to me..hrr...''.
Suddenly Jacoby stopped and turned quickly to pull Rico by the arm, when a gentle breeze stroke Jacoby's face lifting his long hair and fringe off his face revealing a set of blue eyes as piercing the skies of Julys.
Rico had his face down starring at the gem in the cente of his hand, his arm stretched straight towards the void trying to get Jacoby to notice.
His face was grinching with excitement.
Jacoby looked down to scrutinise what Rico was holding and for a split second the two boys stool still as if gripped by time the ground they stood on and the object, in total trance, as the marble flashed jewels of lights diamonish shaped.
Their concentration flew through them into a suspense of disbelief.
Everything felt quiet. The world had stopped moving for a second or two.
Slowly Jabocy's voice rose from the depthness of his thoughts, into the eeriness of the silence, staggered, almost trembling, murmuring the words:
'' Aha!!!!I..you.....what..this...this is...surely not...no way ..I am not.. are we... we are.. supposed.. to ..smile?!!''
