The Soldier's Wife

Scarcely was it time enough to breathe
a moment they were given which felt stolen,
making it all the more delicious
and yet still so much the bitter.

She savored this body,
miraculously still whole
with a beating heart inside,
but she wondered at moments
stealing glances in his eyes,
how intact?

Her love was tempered with
momentary bursts of fear
that left her trembling in regret,
though she knew that heart
full of holes as it may be,
belonged still to her.

But this body that she would
hold onto for dear life was not
hers to keep, she knew it belonged
to them, and he may well have
signed his soul to the devil
for it was buried somewhere
in that arid earthbound hell.

They were mocking in their generosity
of restoring him to her again,
knowing they could without question
summon him back, and next time
they may send him back by piecemeal,
would they than still allow her to have
his heart when nothing else was left,
after they stripped everything else away?

It has a calm and controlled tone throughout and a reasonable narrative. There were some evocative images such as 'send him back by peicemal' but I'm not so sure about an 'arid hell'. Possibly the imagery of the heart is a bit cliche. But all in all this was satisfying read.

Thank you very much. As far as the "arid hell" I can see where it could be taken that way, though when I wrote it I was not necessarily thinking of the heat factor, but that the carnage of war would be like a living hell.

O yes fair enough, I just thought a finer word could be used, but saying that I can't think of one!

ah, war appetites to devour whatever life has connected or sealed...
