do you set yourself standards by which you adhere to in order to live and enjoy your life?
if so what are they?

Never trust the mass mentality.

No, it applies to anyone who think before they act.

I have one motto in life, and though it has become somewhat cliche these days, I still try to stick to it: I'd rather regret the things I have done than the things I did not do.
Here are a few other 'standards' I try to live by:
1. Be kind and compassionate
2. never leave things unsaid
3. be honest
4. love as much as you can, even when it isn't returned
5. Don't spread rumors
6. don't judge others (as long as one is not intentionally harming oneself and others they should be able to do as they please.. not my place to pass judgment)
7. HAVE COURAGE.
And I'll agree with you, Emil.

But then again the world has an overabundance of thinkers, and a strong scarcity of men willing to act upon their thoughts.

And yet the opposite, as Emil hinted, is also true. The world has a scarcity of men who think before they act.

Well gentlemen, looks like we have found ourselves a mighty fine conundrum.

Your other post in this thread makes me think of D.H Lawrence.
But then again the world has an overabundance of thinkers, and a strong scarcity of men willing to act upon their thoughts.
One of his principal themes concerned how we are so often rendered impotent and ineffectual through excessive consciousness.
"My great religion is a belief in the blood, the flesh, as being wiser than the intellect. We can go wrong in our minds. But what our blood feels and believes and says, is always true. The intellect is only a bit and a bridle."
"Ours is an excessively conscious age. We know so much, we feel so little."

I've got one of those older brothers who likes to start off sentences with 'you know what your problem is...' and end it with 'I only say it because I love you' I prefer to use my own judgement and values - even if my decisions don't work out as I hoped or I take a wrong turn, that in itself is a learning point. Poetic Passions made some good points. I would recommend to respond rather than react which is really what Emil is saying I guess.

I think the conumdrum is solved in that we need more men who can think and act in good measure and balance.

I tend to act BEFORE I think, so my time is spent perfecting a grovelling-apology-retribution-plan.
But seriously, I just put compassion before anything else and try not to mouth off about things I don't really understand. I remind myself that I DO NOT HAVE A MONOPOLY ON THE "TRUTH". I get by just fine.

Do you think this is true for a large percentage of humans but the outliers seem to get more of the attention? You hardly ever see a news story about a guy who made a balanced decision you only hear about the guy that made wings out of beer cans and jumped off the roof.

This is why I humbly ask for your vote and the kind support of Onlit in my humble quest for King of the World. I have some key advisors from the Onlit family and will be making annoucements shortly.
But on a positive note, there are alot of sensible people behind the scenes and they make good decisons which propell society forward. And that's how I think human society works and advances and why I think it works and advances on the long big graph:smile5:
- Avoid dogma
- Put all you are told through a critical filter
- Listen to your intuition when you have to make a decision
- Always have purpose

Haha, I think you're right. I've been surprised numerous times by how many people are actually very level-headed, when my car stalls in the busiest lane in Edmonton for example and the people who stop to help me know exactly what do to, or when the quiet kid in my English class speak up for the first time in four months and points something out that everyone else missed.
Anyway, I have rules.
1. Be honest, especially to yourself.
2. Don't cling to ideas.
3. If you overhear someone saying something that makes you want to strangle a panda, try very hard to either leave or drown them out.
4. If you're ever afraid of something, face it directly.

I used to be very impulsive but now I've changed my ways. My rules are-
1. Think before you act or even speak. Everyone is not fit to know everything you know.
2. Be honest.
3. Don't judge others.
4. Don't make fun of others.
5. Do not expect any favor from anyone.
6. Set goals and check your progress. Every other day should find you a little better than the day before.

Strangle a panda!! I try to picture myself doing this and I think it would just be too difficult.:yikes: Can I strangle a politician instead?

Haha, that's the image of rage that I borrowed from Skib. Imagine how PO'd you have to be to strangle a panda.

Ya, very PO'd !!! I did want to strangle some politicians today as I spoke in front of many today at a public forum concerning budget cuts to the mentally ill. Off topic, BUT- remember that politicians are supposed to work for US, we are not their subordinates. Okay, off my soap box, for now.

Humanity is supposed to be a group based species, but I have never done so well in groups, which is why I enjoy the solitary activities of reading and writing so much. I have only a few guidelines for how I live my life:
Do not intefere with the free will of others.
Take each day as it comes and try and live every waking hour of it to the full.
Don't live by guidelines, live by the direction of heart and mind and soul.
