In many cases I have both imbibed & written stories in bars around the world.

Perhaps it shows?

haha ;)

I have been known to write while slightly drunk.. though I will say that most of the time, I'd prefer to be completely sober. I don't think my writing makes much sense when I am under the influence of anything, and I have a hard time concentrating. However, my dad says he writes best when he is somewhat drunk, and from what I have read, Firtzgerald couldn't write unless he was drunk... but a lot of authors were on drugs or had alcohol problems...

And a lot of students that I know use ADHD drugs to write papers...

My drug of choice is sadness. I always write better when I am depressed, melancholy, or heartbroken.

wow..students and drugs that's bad.
Lots of writers are said to have written whilst on Opium.
I hear Anthony Burgess wrote clockwork orange whilst on it.

I often wondered how he was able to make such a mess. Still, if I had a name like Jackson Pollock I would probably take to drink as well.

I'm the opposite. I have difficulty getting anything onto the page when I'm depressed. One of the reasons I don't write nearly as much as I wish.

Hitchens said he used to write almost everything while slightly intoxicated. I've never tried. I either abstain entirely or go overboard and drink a barrell, so I think whatever I wrote would likely be incoherent.

I never drink alcohol, never liked it back when i tried. But i am a relatively heavy smoker (1 1/2 packs per day) and i mostly smoke when i write since it seems to help me concentrate more, although it might be just my impression...

I only ever feel like writing when I'm high, because I've learned that I can't read or study since I never remember anything. None of it makes much sense. I once wrote a three-page ramble trying to convince my sober self to call my friend's hippie wife because I wanted to visit her bean field.

The nursing students that I know take ativan before exams. That's stupid, ativan does help you relax but it also hinders memory.

I only really write fanfic when I'm either sleep-deprived or a little tiddly, but I only write original work when I'm sober.

I find that writing has a healing quality to it, and it helps when I feel really blue. I read a study once that said that grumpy people tend to be better at critical writing and at making arguments, while happy people tend to be more creative. So... not sure what that means for me.

As for abstaining entirely or going overboard-- I can relate to that. I am a person of extremes and generally tend to over-indulge (all or nothing). So that is also why I can't really write when drinking :)
