Have you ever felt horrified by a nightmare?
In the past i had nightmares very often, due to unresolved issues that persisted in my mind. Now i rarely see a real nightmare, witnessing instead dreams of more varying psychical tones.

Most people seem to have nightmares of the somatic-harming type, ie where parts of their body are harmed, or at risk of being harmed. But i am more interested in different kinds.

This is my recollection of a nightmare i had when i was 10. I still am unsure just what it meant, but it was very strong and i woke up terrified.
I was summoned in a void, where above a massive circle of glowing animal heads kept revolving. One of them spoke, which appeared to be their leader, and was the head of a lion. I do not recall what else it said, just that "...if you ever go against your mother again you will be destroyed"

After waking up i was so afraid that i immediately went to wake up my mother and ask her forgiveness for a little fight we had earlier that day.

Now the dream was not just about that little unpleasantness. My relation with my parents was problematic at best. But i am not sure what the deity-like multi-cephalus animal-being was supposed to represent.

I never have nightmares, but my boyfriend has psychotic ones. His nightmares are very Eraserhead-esque, lots of blood, growths, maggots, dubious surgeries, rotting, ect. He wakes up fighting, I've thought he was going to kill me on numerous occasions.

as a kid I often had nightmares about being alone on a rock in the middle of the ocean and hearing a male voice I didn't understand. there were similar rocks all around me and they all had green slime on them that turned into people. It was very creepy. Every now and then I get the 'nightmare feeling' I feel my heart pumping and a loud thud (or something like that) but usually now I can remind myself that it's a dream and it will go away.

I have watched all sorts of movies with my son, his grandma tells me I shouldn't let him watch them but they have never had any affect on him (I am talking superhero movies and LOTR, no horror movies) then we watched a Simpsons episode and he had nightmares about aliens and the 'dad who is always choking his son' like he says, so no more of that...

oh I once had a dream about being shot, but I think that was because my shoulder was hurting in that sleeping position.

Nowadays I only have very mild nightmares, usually about loss - or a vague feeling of loss for someone close.

When I was young I had a recurring nightmare. I am walking in a familiar place, when the ground starts cracking up under my feet. The pieces of earth are floating on dirty milk and are too small and unstable to take my wieght. I am scrambling from piece to piece trying not fall through and drown in the milk.

It is a dream I can remember in exact detail from 40 years ago. I had a happy stable childhood and have no idea what triggered it.

I have nightmares quite often. Mainly I am running away from someone who is trying to kill me and harm me. Generally the dreams are tedious, I hide in various places, but always on the look out and on the run. Last night, in fact, I had one of these dreams... I was jolted out of it by my alarm, and I had a very difficult time waking up and getting up... they tend to make me feel psychologically tired.

I have also had some crazy dreams... involving rape and murder and monsters even. Or natural disasters like tsunamis.

Thank you all for sharing :)

It is argued in psychology that dreams are made of symbols, like complete allegories. In them everyone (the dreamer) is an artist.
My own childhood was very problematic, and i had various nightmares, mostly a recurring one at the time of a dark unseen being which was running after me.
