Who sits around all day and talks about getting married? The writing style was great, I just wish the content was better. Read this book only if you want to improve your writing style.

I think perhaps that was a little harsh to say... have you ever read the book while keeping in mind the historical context? 'Pride and Prejudice' was not written for a 21st Century reader. At the time of Austen's writing, marriage was a key issue for women everywhere, which, incidentally this book is predominantly aimed at. Marriage was the solution to all other issues in a woman's life in the late 1700s - early 1800s whether they were financial, romantic, social, etc...
For example, in the case of the Bennet family where they are all bordering poverty and there are no sons to pass the Bennet estate on to when Mr Benet dies, a wealthy marriage or marriage to another member within the family would be greatly needed, otherwise all of the Bennets would be living in the gutter with no money and no food. Do you see the importance of historical context in Jane Austen's novels now? I can why you may say that it is silly to sit around thinking of marriage all day by modern standards but in the contemporary sense, a beneficial marriage could change everything for a woman.

exactly, and this novel was written just after the French Revolution.so this came as Jane Austen's conservative reaction to the 'rational' noel. She once said that all u need to write a novel about is one village and four families ( i forgot the exact words but something to that effect)
