Interruption of Sex

It's a human behavourial question, so I think its appropriate.

Why do we noisily stop our dogs (or other pets) from having sex with other dogs in front of us even when they are neutered? I did this the other day again with Sam (my dog) who really fancies his (neutered) girlfrend, a very attractive poodle. I thought about it and I really should let them continue.

I think I would be most annoyed if someone did the same to me. So bloody rude!

Well if I were having sex in public I'd expect to get interrupted too. What I do not understand is why people get mad at dogs for doing their business on the floor. I remember one time my mother was angry at the dog for days because we wet the floor after being left inside all day while we were out one Thanksgiving. Dogs lack opposable thumbs. They can't merely open the front door and go out onto the lawn.

Yea, but they are dogs. It's not like they have their own room or can ask for a room. Strangely we dont stop birds, well usually not.

Well, the whole, "That is inappropriate!" reaction is probably true in a lot of cases.

I would also like to add, that in all likelihood, you are not having sex at the same time as the animal in question. Envy is a powerful emotion.

The only reason I stop my neutered make dog from humping my neutered female dog is because, when the urge should strike him, she does not seem to be amused. I'd rather stop a potential fight before it starts. If she seemed into it, and I didn't ba e company, I doubt I'd intervene. It's not like they're going to talk dirty or become obscene like some porno. They do enjoy giving each other rim-jobs from time-to-time, though, which they do seem to like receiving. I usually let it go.

my dogs are neutered so I don't stop them if they are bugging a female, usually they can defend themselves well if they want to and that makes them less likely to try again. If a male dog does this to another male I give them a light kick in the behind because the dogs around me that do this usually are trying to humiliate the neutered one and nobody humiliates my dog! but this is because I know all the dogs we meet, I might stop it if it were a strangers female.

When it comes to my dogs, they have interrupted me more than once so they have it coming.

Sam (my dog) has an annoying tendency of being the "bottom" to a couple of his mates, which weirds me out. A top, yes - maybe. I just do not want to see him as the beta in the pack, he has so much alpha potential!

Don't dogs get literally stuck together when they mate? I don't want two dogs stuck together in the middle of my living room.

Yea, that happens when the female is trying to get away (bummer). It's natural though and they do untangle with little effort.

Are you sure it's that easy to seperate them? I learned that dogs get stuck together to stop the other male dogs who want to breed from fighting so that they don't risk killing the female in the battle fray. Like, if one male dog mounts a female and you are another male dog who wants to get in there, you might attack the mounted male and in doing so you might inadvertently hurt the female. When a male dies in a fray it only improves the species because the strong males kill the weaker males and then those stronger males can go on to breed twenty times a day and make hundreds of strong little puppies if they have a mind to, but a pregnant female can only breed once/season and so it's important that they are conserved. If they get stuck together, then the other competing male dogs are like "sh*t, it's over, let's go fight over someone else," and the fighting never gets anywhere near the female. The stuck-together aspect of canine breeding is important, so you'd think it would be almost impossible to seperate them.

If the Buddhists are right I'm hoping I get reborn as a dolphin or chimp. That's weird. I always assumed sexual pleasure was universal across the animal kingdom.

Edit: We don't actually understand much about sexual pleasure in other animals. We know that many primates and dolphins use sex and masturbation for stress release and social bonding. So far those are the only other animals that use sex for reasons other than reproduction that we're sure of.

Apparently bed bugs reproduce by the male penetrating the female's abdomen and ejaculating into her hemolymph. They certainly have developed a number of very interesting reproductive strategies.

A lot of stick insects are exclusively parthonogenetic, they give birth to little female clones of themselves.

Eugh. That sounds familiar, I think that might have been one of the ones mentioned on your weird-yet-cool "how bugs have sex" performance art videos. My favorite was the earth worm, when I was a kid I used to play with that wrinkly skin-piece of theirs.
