I can write eloquent sentences, but one thing has always haunt me since my earliest writings days: connecting them. How do I connect my sentences and paragraphs to make the essay or writing more cohesive?

Didn't they use to teach that:
The essay begins with an introduction and a thesis.
The thesis is supported by various points of the argument.
Every body paragraph is centrally concerned with the point that supports the thesis. The rest of the paragraph is an argument for that point or a transition to the next. Any sub-points cohere and give support to the main point of the paragraph, which gives support to the thesis.
This reader admits the last time he used that was sophomore year of college. It seemed to be what they wanted though, up until a critical thinking class or whatever. Usually anything past that in terms of writing style/field of specialty has its own nomenclature or standards. For example, philosophical writing or writing an abstract or case study is much different than the prototypical expository essay.

Isn't it like anything else? You're going somewhere and taking the reader with you. Put in some extra words just to be explicit. Then edit them out until it runs smoothly but is still clear.

My advice is read as much as you can. Most people identify what works best by reading the work of established writers then trying to copy the style - be it psychological thriller or fantasy or literary novel. Concise writing is simply using words efficiently and effectively - getting them to do what you want without making the manipulation too obvious.
