Meticulously evil
in everything he does
The Devil is a weevil
in the bread of life, because;
His metier is menacing,
His inclinations cruel,
religion often benefits
from such a useful tool:
a scapegoat for misfortune,
and a useful chap to blame,
Satan's reputation
is so easy to maintain.
His fingerprints are everywhere
and seldom twice the same,
as many willing hands will make
light work of all his games.
With more than twelve apostles
opposition’s on the ropes,
it’s really very handy
when your followers are Popes.

An insightful and thought provoking satire showing us there's humanity in the devil. We demonize others because we need a scapegoat and it is God's job to save or deliver us from evil. What makes this piece so accessible is while plenty of folks need to proof their intellect by taking pot shots at Christianity, you show such mastery in instilling good natured humor without bitterness and condemnation. Superbly done, Hawk.

Thanks haunted :) If it can't be done with wit and good humour it's not worth doing :D

It's a balanced poem between the flow of the language and the humorous theme. Enjoyed it!

Effortlessly written and an enjoyable poem, Hawk.

Did you see this programme (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b016ptr6) about Satan?

Or, indeed, heard this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bOe1UduwvI&feature=watch_response)?

Well, as the old folklore maintained, if you really want to piss off the Devil, all you have to do is laugh at him.

This is a good one, Hawk, full of wit and wisdom.

Hi b/v: I did see the first of your references and yes, Old Harry's Game was at the back of my mind when I wrote this, as indeed was Dante's Inferno.

For the benefit of non UK Nationals, Old Harry's Game is a BBC Radio 4 Comedy Series. The programme features 3 main characters: The Prof, a basically good man who died and went to hell because he didn't believe in God, Satan, and a particularly stupid demon called Scumspawn.

The Prof an eternal optimist, is consantly arguing that man is essentially good with the Devil, who keeps demonstrating that he isn't. In an early episode Satan was giving The Prof a tour of hell and showed him a dungeon he reserved for Popes - their punishment was to be perpetually pregnant. It's a while since I read it, but I'm fairly sure Dante also had a pope or two in hell.

As for the second one, No, not really my scene. Glad you enjoyed the poem though :D

Auntie: Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :)

I saw the humour in this more than anything else especially the lines:

a scapegoat for misfortune,
and a useful chap to blame,

which for some reason reminded me of the poor family dog taking the blame for every fart in the house!

Delta: Many thanks for reading. Isn't it strange how when a dog is present in a domicile, bad smells may be carelessly attributed to it. It's a sort of tradition, but cats seem to be immune from blame. True, dogs tend to smell pretty bad whether their internal biological functions vent into the atmosphere or not. Cat's, though, possess such innate dignity that their human slaves would not dare to question their perfection, at least not publicly. However, I know from personal experience that a cat is more than capable of flavouring the air unvavourably. That drooling, purring, prickle-clawed bundle of fur on the lap is far from guiltless. Guilefully, it will emit a positively foul stench which surrounds one in a cloying miasmic cloud, capable of making even a carrion eating hyena gag. Watch the cat when it does this. If you look cloesly you will see it smile.

Twota: Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. :)
