The introduction to my book "Of mice and men" says Steinbeck influenced heavily by the style and aesthetic perception of Hemingway. Is this true and how?

I don't recall reading that in my version of Of Mice and Men, are you sure you didn't read that on your teachers blackboard?

Steinbeck did say that one of his favorite writers is Hemingway (his short stories specifically), along with Faulkner. I am sure there was some influence, as all writers tend to be influenced and inspired by other writers and predecessors, but to say that he was heavily influenced by Hemingway's style seems a bit of a stretch (to me, at least).

I can see a few parallels between Steinbeck and Hemingway I suppose. Stylistically, both of them are short, to the point and realist in approach. I find that there is nothing "spare" in both of them, etc, etc, but at the same time both of them have their own fingerprints too.
