Crowd gathered at the pier

Subdued Victorian jubilation

Crows squawk above

As flashes puff

To take pasty faced daguerrotypes

Of the adventurers

A pedal powered submarine

To Atlantis' Sister City

Fat kid loses his icecream scoop

Jaw drops mid-lick

Mouth agape as the iron cigar sinks

Air bubbles pop from the surface

Like a fart in the bath

Deepsea diver lowered

To check all's well

As a shot rings out

Banners, parasols and balloons

Blow in the ocean breeze

Brass Band oompahs on the rotunda

As the event becomes yesterday's news

Three weeks later the headline

Scientist Locates Lost City!

Still Inhabited

Though More A Large Town

Man Has Devolved

Into Creature With Gills

And a waterlogged ink sketch

Provided as proof

Wild scenes break as the

Geographical Society

Hammer it out tooth and claw

In court

With the Church

Furious letters to the editor ensue

Royal Navy debating

Whether to retaliate first

What's to be done?

And where's Ken Russell when you need him?

Wow - 53 views!

Hey, thanks for reading everyone. I sort of envisioned this as the missing story from the Jules Verne/H.G. Wells pantheon. I began a rough draft about a month ago, and had just found out that Ken Russell had gone to the Great Movie Studio in the Sky.

Sad day for cinema and the world :(

This reader thought of Jules Verne when he read this, actually. And Plato.

This is going to sound weird, but 'fart in the bath' is actually pretty striking imagery.

The poem devolves into chaos in true Mystyry style, with the church versus science a la Scopes Monkey Trial. But this reader must confess he doesn't know who Ken Russell is...

Thanks Jacko

Ken Russel is a flamboyant director to be sure, and for a period his film releases were always hailed as 'an event', though that's not what the title refers to - he had a way of breathing life into any subject no matter how dire. :)
