Recently I was talking to a friend of mine who is a Brit fan. Knowing that I'm an American fan, she said: "To me American literature is so obsessed with Puritanism. Most works either promote Puritanical values or vehemently oppose them", what is your thought on this statement? Do you think she's right? Do you think maybe her Brit tendency had influenced her answer?

This is the sort of thing that makes me wonder whether I woke up on the right planet. I think that there was a strong tendency toward hwhat she claims in the past, but if we are discussing literature from the last 150 years, then there is little of Puritanism or anti-Puritanism in it. If you want to define those things very broadly, then you could say that all literature could be described as she suggested, but that wouldn't be useful.

She's right if she's speaking exclusively of literature written 200+ years ago. . . .

I think she was just trying to give some intellectual-sounding reason for disliking American lit.

I prefer Brit lit too because the language is usually nicer and the stories are less boring. Not always but in general.
