Bésame, bésame mucho,
a timid humming
by the oil press
busy with the harvest.

Then by the pool anew
where starry flounder glitter,
Bésame, bésame parts
the humid air

and as the sun exhales
its last coral flame
like a dragon’s,
bésame, muuucho

smears the twilight.
Pepper trees hold tight
the wind’s fainting
...cho, bésa…,

but loosen. And
the voice, scarring the night
dark red, signs off with
…después? Nunca… me...

I liked the third stanza with the idea of the setting sun reminding one of how a dragon might look.

I hope you are well after what appears to be an accident you mentioned in the introduction.

Amazing that you had the presence of mind to write this in spite of your injuries. I have no real criticisms to offer, but it was a delightful taste of autumnal spirits.

Bless you for bringing back the memory of that no-holds-bard love-song, although perhaps by doing so you've pigeon-holed yourself and me as being of a certain age.

Those who haven't heard it will find one of several renditions at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPRESlT4Ccg

And the poem employs it so skillfully. I hope you have begun and will continue to heal!

Thanks a lot YesNo, Delta, Deryk and Prince for reading and commenting this.

Prince, I've recently heard the Beatles' version of ageless Bésame on a radio programme and as theirs is so optimistic and fresh love-me-forever, something pushed me to darken the story a bit, to introduce disquiet...

Best to you all,

Wonderfully simple and (that word again) effortless, Bar; I enjoyed the way the song is interwoven with the poem. The opening stanza has shades of Keats; the second, Richard Wilbur's 'Mayflies', so you're in good company!

I'm in good company indeed! Keats, Wilburn, BlankVerse, Prince, Delta, Deryk, YesNo...

I'm happy you liked my little thing whose only effort was to make its way through a horrendous pain barrier and take me away from it for a moment (but now all is cooling down fast).

Thank you very much for your comment!!
