What if our world is slowing turning into 1984? Maybe not to that extreme. But I don't think were aware of it.
For example; when the drinking age was 18 people were okay with it. It became normal. Now the drinking age is 21, and if you drink when you're 18 it's considered bad. This brings me to my point that when one thing chants people might not be okay with it then it becomes normal. This is how things get out of control with out us realizing it.
In the book, it becomes normal for people to not care about history, then not buy antiques, then they feel like they have to destroy them. Someone from before the time of Big Brother might not agree with destroing antiques. That's cause it's normal for them buy antiques.
I believe our world is becoming like that. Or maybe not I've only been around 16 years. What do I know?

I agree that we are slowly forming into this 1984 life style. Almost everything in this book can be related to our modern day life. In a way it's sort of depressing when you think about it because George Orwell does not seem to be very optomistic about this future world. I also wonder about the fact that we just become accustomed to new changes when they happen not even thinking about what it was like before. Often we find ourselves complaining about recent changes one day and completely forgetting about them the next. Is this because we have too much going on in our lives or we just simply don't care anymore?

I completely agree with both of you. But I'd like to bring up the point that it's our job as citizens to call out our government when we think they're making a wrong decision. We have those rights and we should definitely use them. I feel as if society puts this image into our heads that if we protest against something, we're being unpatriotic. But isn't freedom (of speech, press, assembly, petition) what our country was based on? So, if anything, by standing up against the things you believe would have a negative impact on the people and the country, maybe you're actually being patriotic. In order for us to steer clear of the kind of government in 1984, we must do our part as citizens.

I completely agree with the two of you. It is our part as citizens. We're just to lazy though. And it doesn't help that the government makes it seem as if we're not supposed to protest or use our voice. If we do, they will be striped of their power.

Big Brother is alive and well - not just in our governments but in the business world. Think about supermarkets for example - if you have a 'loyalty card' and use it, they know your shopping habits and tailor their special deals to your personal shopping preferences. It might not seem that important an issue, but there are computers somewhere logging almost every aspect of your personal life. Your internet usage, telephone calls, travel, shopping habits, spedning patterns. We're living in a paranoid state whether we know it or not.
And as for the government dictating how we live our lives and sneakily undermining our perceptions of free will - some people actually like having every life-decision taken out of their hands. Good job there are others with the wits to recognise the warning signs and act accordingly.
Viva la revolution.
