Julia and Winston have "adopted" the room upstairs as their secret hiding place. I believe that this means that they are starting to get some real feelings for another. This belief is magnified when they are at O'Briens and Julia refuses to agree to almost losing Winston. They know that they are going to die in the near future and they are prepared for that but they are not prepared to lose each other.

It seems that if they die, they'll lose each other unless they have some magic formula.

Julia and Winston never felt a love for each other. Their relationship was merely of a political act, and maybe lust, but most for political rebellion.

I believe they are developing feelings for eachother. The simple things they are doing show this. I believe they would not have "adopted" the room upstairs for a "hideout" if they didn't have any feelings for eachother. Although I do believe their relationship started through political rebellion, and could end that way.

I believe this is could possibly be symbolization for the political rebellion in general. If they die, the rebellion will perish along side them. If they are separated, the bonds between the elements of rebellion will be broken.

I disagree with what you said about Winston and Julia renting the Room upstairs because they're starting to get some real feelings for each other. I believe they are renting the room upstairs because it's a safeplace with no telescreen. It's a place to 'rebel', and say and do what they want to do without getting caught. Not becasue they have stronger feelings for one another.
