It seems that the proles in 1984 have little concern for any important issues that arise in their lives. They are all very concerned with "pots and pans" and "the lottery." I think Orwell rings the bell here. Our society today pays almost no attention to our own government as well as what is going on in the world. I had to tell a girl in my class about the revolution in Libya because she was more concerned about Beibers new hit. The proles in 1984 are too concered with material items that will never last. Is there anyway orwell is wrong about this today?

There is little way to argue that Orwell was wrong about the modern-day obsession with things similar to the pots and pans of the Proles. If you open up any browser such as MSN or Yahoo, you'll be sure to find at least one story that revolves around a pop-culture or sports scandal or even an unimportant event that has to do with pop-culture, such as Justin Bieber's new haircut. The old man cares about the amount of beer he gets for his dollar over government conspiracies; Christina Aguilera's dress choice has 5,297 comments on MSN...South Africa's passing of a controversial bill has 5 comments. This shows that our society puts just as much importance on the "important" aspects as they did in 1984, just not to the extremes. So, no. Orwell was spot on...but does that mean there is no hope for modern day society?

There is little doubt that this occurs as a materialistic world. Did it ever occur otherwise in the three dimensions of life? Never, except in the two dimensions of existence and being, with thousands of systems of circular confusions which we called philosophies.

If there is hope for our own future, it relies on the things that most infulence us everyday.

You would think that what most influences us would be the inspiring words historical figures whom have spoken honest and true.

Instead the people who inspire our culture are people who have done little but act in front of a camera. Its a little disappointing that thoes with little real world experiance get to decide what our fate is.
