My question has to do with how people in this novel think. So far no one has really seemed to have strong feelings, or done anything impulsively, besides Winston and Julia. I was wondering if any of you thought that the some-what non important characters in the novel have any of the same feelings as Winston does. i.e. hating Big Brother, worrying constantly about the thought police, rebelling against the government..:willy_nilly:

In this society created by Orwell, it's impossible to know. No body will share their true thoughts, because even THINKING against the party is a crime. In their emotionless culture, sharing negative thoughts about Big Brother is supposedly punishable by death. This sense of fear is oppressed among the people to prevent any possible revolt. We get a personal view of Winston's life, and therefore see his rebellious actions. From Winston's eyes, there is no true way of telling if others feel the same.

I think that like mentioned above Winston will never know. If you recall O'Brien told Winston that he will only ever know possibly a handful of people that are against big bother. If you look at the characters many of them are the perfect exmaple of pure brainwashing. The party basically tells the people what to think and they do just that. I think that there are characters mentioned that may be against the party or big brother but unfortunatly Winston will probably never know.

I believe that most of the people in Oceania are expressionless. They convinced themselves that they must not think of anything bad, so the thought police don't get them, like Winston eventually did at the end of the book. Or they were caught, also like Winston, and forced to be unemotional and sodden. Big Brother wants to make the whole of Oceania boring and opaque, he does this by catching people who commit thought crimes and forcing them to become expressionless. O'Brien said, before they destroy the people, they change their thought into accepting Big Brother so that when they die Big Brother and the government have won over their mind and spirit. There may be others out there that are against Big Brother, but for the majority most everyone is stuck in one emotionless life that they don't believe can be changed.

I agree that some people in Oceaina dont think like Winston and Julia because they are afraid. But, there has to be some "non important characters" that thought like them! I dont believe that they were the only ones. Not everyone could have been oblivious to what was happening. And if Winston and Julia could realize it...why not anyone else???!!
