It's a reflective essay on a social issue chosen from a novel we chose to read. My book was Walking Naked by Alyssa Brugman. I chose bullying as my social issue and as it is a reflective essay I have had to add some of my own experiences but reading it over I am not sure about how it sounds. Please keep it mind that it is not completed. It is a speech.

Imagine dreading going to school every day, knowing that you were going to be tortured by your fellow classmates and that no one was going to help you. That you were by yourself in this hell that is your school life. Or, imagine that you are the bully, your victim isn’t at school today and a whole school assembly has been called. You walk in and sit down, not really caring about what the principal is about to tell you. The school quietens and then you hear their name. Your victim. And the word suicide. Your victim committed suicide because of you. Bullicide. And it’s your fault. You have effectively just murdered someone.

Good morning Mrs **** and year eleven English, I am **** and I will be talking about bullying and the affects it can have on the people around you. Now, put your hand up if you’ve been bullied. Ok than; put your hand up if you’ve been the bully. There are many different types of bullying. Physical: punching the hades out of someone weaker and more vulnerable than you. Verbal: Calling someone foul names or teasing them about how they look. Cyber: The use of the internet and other electrical devices to effectively bully someone 24 hours a day and, last but not least, emotional bullying: Playing with someone’s emotions to the point of depression. There are many different reasons why people bully and sometimes it is hard to spot the signs.

When I was in primary school there was a group of people in our class who used to have different bullying targets every few months. At one time, they turned their sights on me. I hadn’t made many friends in my class at this point, I had just recently moved to that area, so I had no one to turn to during it. It was a mix of physical and verbal which boiled to a point when I lashed out at one of the bullies. We are regularly told that if we are being bullied to go to a parent or a teacher but in reality there isn’t actually much that an adult can do. The bullies have been defying the teachers for enough time to make you feel you have to go to a teacher, just because you have won’t make them stop. At least, that is what most victims feel. I felt that. I am sure most of you have as well.

A few points you might consider :

1) Bullicide is the wrong word because it means the killing of a bully not suicide as a result of bullying.

2) Who is speaking in paragraph 1 and 3? I guess it’s you.
So who is introducing themselves in paragraph 2 and why? It sounds like it’s someone else other than you so I’m not sure how you’re going to pull this off in a speech. Nor do I see why he/she goes through the exercise of asking members of the class to identify themselves as bullies or victims because it has no significance on what follows – an explanation of the different types of bullying.

3) You’ve made no reference to the book you read – were you meant to mention how you came up with the idea?

Bullicide is a term for someone commiting suicide because of bullying. However it is a relatively new term but it is regularly used as a refernce to this tragedy.

I did mention it isn't finished. We are supposed to make a small acknowledgement of the novel but the main purpose of the novels was to read them, and choose a specific issue that stands out to us from the book.

That is part of the curriculum and you are supposed to get the class involved. Like a lecture I guess.

I guess you are right in that case - but whoever came up with the term obviously didn't understand the meaning of the root '-cide' which means to kill or murder - so that 'sui-cide' means to kill oneself, 'patri-cide' to kill one's father, 'fratri-cide' to kill one's brother, 'regi-cide' to kill a king and so presumably 'bulli-cide' to kill a bully.

I guess it was originally a play on the word suicide. Bullicide is the result of someone commiting suicide because of bullying so that is most likely where the term stems from.
