Feelings clump like kitty litter
only to be shovelled
into a plastic shopping bag full of holes,
the handles tightly knotted
as if it will stop the leakage.
Small nuggets of me leave a trail
to the bus stop covered in scrawls
of graffiti love and defaced hate.
Over time the paint has peeled off in chunks.
Under a moonlit night,
I dump the bag in an overflowing bin.
My hodgepodge of emotional garbage
can be discarded,
unloaded,
left to harden like clay
while I tip toe back inside
and lock the security door.

From one who deals with kitty litter daily, I found this a fitting simile. And the shopping bag with holes — perfect!

The trip to the bus stop and back seemed disjointed a little, as if you walked to the bus stop and then tip toed back home without going anywhere, but maybe that was your intention.

Your poems always surprise.

Thanks Firefangled. Perhaps I should have put a little more thought into it as it was one of those 'in the moment' compositions.

Reading this taut, economical poem after the sweep of your more recent one I could hardly believe they written by the same person, although they have sadness in common..

One can imagine the texture... yech. It makes this reader wonder how on earth you thought to make such a comparison? Definitely original.

The lines have a nice, scuttling cadence that match the delicacy of the disposal. I find it ironic that the emotional baggage builds and climaxes as the real baggage is disposed. That's a great opposition. Garbage is so conducive to internalization, because it often displaces our senses so well. I love the way you've layered emotion against image.

Isn't it odd how doing certain things can trigger thoughts. You know you can never escape your feelings just like some one has to clean the litter box.

I enjoyed it!
