Ooh, I've been waiting for this one. I would like to nominate The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. It's spooky, atmospheric, set over the 12 days of christmas incorporating lots of Christmas / Yuletide mythology. It's good for kids and adults alike and fairly easy/quick to read. And it's ace. What more could you ask for?

I would like to nominate The Handmaid and the Carpenter by Elizabeth Berg.

Some information on the book:

That sounds interesting. The Moomintroll books were my favourite as a kid.
