Ooh, I've been waiting for this one. I would like to nominate The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. It's spooky, atmospheric, set over the 12 days of christmas incorporating lots of Christmas / Yuletide mythology. It's good for kids and adults alike and fairly easy/quick to read. And it's ace. What more could you ask for?

I would like to nominate The Handmaid and the Carpenter by Elizabeth Berg.

Some information on the book:

In this wonderful novel about love and trust, hope and belief, Elizabeth Berg, the bestselling author of We Are All Welcome Here and The Year of Pleasures, transports us to Nazareth in biblical times to reimagine the events of the classic Christmas story.

We see Mary–young, strong, and inquisitive–as she first meets Joseph, a serious-minded young carpenter who is steadfastly devoted to the religious traditions of their people. The two become betrothed, but are soon faced with an unexpected pregnancy. Aided by a great and abiding love, they endure challenges to their relationship as well as threats to their lives as they come to terms with the mysterious circumstances surrounding the birth of their child, Jesus. For Mary, the pregnancy is a divine miracle and a privilege. For Joseph, it is an ongoing test not only of his courage but of his faith–in his wife as well as in his God.

Exquisitely written and imbued with the truthful emotions and richness of detail that have earned Elizabeth Berg a devoted readership, The Handmaid and the Carpenter explores lives touched profoundly by miracles large and small. This powerful and moving novel is destined to become a classic.

Nominations so far:

A Winter Book, by Tove Jansson.
A series of quirky stories told by a master storyteller, interspersed by extracts of fan mail from a Japanese schoolgirl who burns to write as much as the author does. You won't 've read anything like it.

That sounds interesting. The Moomintroll books were my favourite as a kid.

How can A Christmas Carol not get a nomination? I solve that. I nominate it.

Come on people, vote for something different. You'll be watching 50 different versions of A Christmas Carol anyway, who needs to read it.

Listen to the voice of the darkness... (Tove Jansson would be good too, she's cool).

When the dark comes rising six shall turn it back
Three from the circle, three from the track
Wood, bronze, iron
Water, fire, stone
Five will return and one go alone...

Come on The Dark is Rising :D
