In our world the thought of magic existing is either preposterous or easily believable, and the definition or our take of the word changes all the time. But in another world magic is an everyday thing and this is where our story takes place. In a world riddled with magic and treachery, Terra.
They had always been told it was dangerous to go near the cliffs but the cliffs were also where the best wild flowers grew. Without strangers feet trampling them it was easy to see the beautiful flowers that indicated where the food was. And this food grew in abundance, making sure the two siblings always went home with full baskets of food and herbs for their mothers shop. Normally they didn’t go anywhere near the edge of the cliff, preferring to stick a respectable distance away from the edge, but this time Jake had spotted a very boring pale flower which didn’t give away its significance. It was a highly rare healing plant, very potent and would be valuable to their mother to no end, all he had to do was get close enough to the very edge of the cliff to dig up the plant and take it home to their mother for replanting.
What Jake hadn’t counted on was the weakness of the earth at edge of the cliff. He had no time to react as the earth disappeared from under his feet, his only thought was to close his hand around the flower tighter, his other hand grabbing a root protruding from the cliff as he dangled above the crashing waves slamming the rocks below him. Jake didn’t remember screaming but he must have because, quick as a flash, his twin sister Teranika was on her stomach looking down at him. Jake supposed in that situation it should’ve have been expected that they both were panicking, which was actually far from the truth. One look at their expressions and you would have thought this always happened to them, just another day gathering herbs. Teranika took hold of a tree branch that had snaked its way near her and pushed herself further over the edge, her other hand stretched out for her brother, teetering dangerously on her stomach.
“Give me the flower!” She yelled over the sound of the waves refusing to let them forget they were there. It might seem strange but Teranika also recognised the flower, both twins always tried their hardest to make things easier for their mother after their father has betrayed them all and run off with another woman. Their mother had been feeling down recently and that flower would not only cheer her up but also help make her healing potions more affective and therefore bringing them more customers. Plus Teranika recognised the set in her brothers’ jaw and knew she had to get him to give her the flower first before she dragged him back up. Jake passed her the flower and she sat up properly, making sure she put it where it wouldn’t get squished by them. She leant back over the cliff but this time the earth shifted under her again and she almost toppled head first into her brother. This time Teranika screamed, which was so loud it made Jake flinch and also got the attention of some men sitting in front of the pub. Teranika supposed it must’ve been a strange sight to see just her legs over the top of the cliff but the twins had always been a regular sight, picking through the flowers near the cliff. There was never one without the other so only seeing one, dangling off the side of a cliff no less, was hardly a good sign. Seconds after Teranika had screamed she felt large hands take hold of the back of her legs and hold her steady. The relief that came over her face told Jake it was safe to swing his hand up and grab hers. There was no way he was going to do it if it meant making his sister lose her balance and die as well. What he hadn’t counted on however, was not being able to reach his sisters hand.
Teranika watched as Jake tried several times to reach her hand, with Teranika stretching her arm out as far as it could go trying to reach him, but it was no use. With horror Teranika realised that Jake hold on the root keeping him suspended above the crashing waves was slipping. No. She could not lose her brother. She would not lose her brother! Panic exploded in Teranikas chest and she tried to make her arm stretch more. Jake tried harder to pull himself up higher but it was no use, there was still a centimetre separating them. Jakes grip was slipping more and more as each moment passed into the inevitable moment when he lost his grip on the root and feel silently backwards, staring up at his sister.
“Nooooooooooooooo!” Teranikas scream, she learnt later, had been heard by the entire town. In that moment she felt a screaming power rush up, blocking her hearing, she felt it rushing towards her outstretched hand. And then it left her, in the form of several golden ribbon like tendrils that plummeted down after her brother. Later Teranika felt shock had what she had done, she hadn’t ever made magic like this before, but right now all that was going through her mind was ‘Save my brother!’. And that was what the tendrils did, they quickly caught up with Jake, wrapped themselves around his body and then, a metre or so from the waves, he stopped, floating in mid-air.
Jake knew perfectly well how close had been to dying as the salt spray from the waves sprinkled his face but all he felt was a strange sense of calm come over him. The golden tendrils were warm as they wrapped around him and were extremely beautiful as well. He looked up at his sister, at the ends of the tendrils still connected to her outstretched fingers, at her relieved and worried face. Instantly he knew what she as thinking, she had done this and stopped her brother from hitting the waves and rocks but now she had no idea how to get him back up to safety.
"Call me up! Order them to take me up!" He wasn't at all sure that Teranika had heard him over the crashing of the waves but, whether she had heard him or come up with the idea herself, he saw her mouth move and the tendrils start to retreat back into her fingers lifting him further and further into the air and closer to safety.
((I got bored in class and started writing this. I think it's a good story, it's only the start but the twins are going to be sent off to a boarding school for Mages and Warriors where Teranika is trained to control the magic that has been continually bursting out of her after this moment and Jake is taught how to physically protect her as Mages need time to cast spells and are normally targeted by monsters and power seekers.))
