Aleph by Paulo Coelho
I am reading the above book (Yea Jersey, it's for the Book Club:)) and I am a quarter of the way through. Someone please help me finish, give me some inspiration! It's tough for a red blooded guy to finish this book, it's so syrupy and his own ego screams though his writing. Yawn, where was I?
I do get why some people like him, it's just not my style. At this point rather than finish the book, I would prefer to have my shins whacked at 5 minute intervals with a quarter inch pipe at half speed(so as to torture me but not enough faint from the actual pain) for days on end in the scorching heat of the Brazilian rain forest while listening to him speak about past loves from proto Celtic times.

Be careful there Tony, I don't like people keeping me in check! I was about to start typing and stopped after I read that you had already answered my question; is it for the book club? LOL!

Sorry, Jersey. I have made a whip for my back, but I have decided to see if I can slug through this book.
He has massive popularity internationally, but strangely not massively popular on this forum.

I read a bunch of his books when I was younger but then I realized that he is always writing about similar things and in the middle of 'the devil and miss Prym' I think, I just couldn't read more. to me he is a writer of this time, he writes about search, search for a meaning in all of this, life, and I think that is something many young people (mainly women) want to read about and he says things that are sometimes odd and sometimes make you think but he is no genius he is not discovering the wheel he is just writing what is popular I think. I did like 'the Alchemist', maybe because it was the first book I read by him and I have to admit that I loved 'Veronica decides to die' but the rest, not so much. but I will say that if you ever decide to read Veronica, don't read anything about it just go in blindly.

I read the Alchemist for my book club and enjoyed it. I think it is one of his most popular books. Helga, I completely agree with you.

Tony- I tend to finish books too, even if I don't like them. BUT I have a friend who always tell me, "Who cares if you didn't finish?" Well, I care and she doesn't have to sit through the conversation feeling like a moron, because the book wasn't finished. I feel for you! I hate reading stuff that turns me off. I feel this way currently about Dracula.

You've been Coelho'd. With luck and intensive care you will recover!

"Veronica decides to die" is very good and different from Alchemist. I have read that and it seemed that he was not talking about himself so much.
Anyway, I am halfway through the meal and will finish it-promise!
