When I did a search on the relationship between Winston Smith and O'Brien
(1984). A friend & I disagreed & I was looking for support for either of our positions. For the record, my read is that O'Brien chose Winston just as Julia did, she for a sexual relationship, he for the only relationship left for an Inner Party Member - to torture, dominate, break, and put a bullet through someone's brain.
