View Full Version : The cheery thread

I've noticed that we (me as much as anyone) seem to devote a lot of thread time to grumbling and groaning, complaining, quibbling, nitpicking and generally being a bit grumpy and miserable, putting the world to rights, as it were. Anyway, I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can talk about nice things, things we like, things that make us happy, generally when we're feeling a bit cheerful. Maybe someone has done something nice for you today, a random (or perhaps not so random) act of kindness. Maybe you just feel happy. I think it would be nice to share the cheery feelings. Granted the thread might not get very long but...
anyway, I feel quite cheery today. It's not raining, there's a sky full of fat, fast moving, interesting clouds, my hubby is lovely and I'm getting quite a lot of work done. I feel I have a sense of purpose. I am alive, and I'm glad of it.
How are you feeling today? Cheery? Tell us why. Happiness breeds happiness. Go on...share :D

One of the few things more cheering than discovering a good new place to eat is bringing someone else there. A new fast food place near me just gave me my first taste of a Vietnamese bahn mi sub, which was excellent, so I'm taking my uncle to lunch there when weather permits.

I am sitting at my favorite cafe drinking my lovely cup of coffee after walking here in the rain, so it's all of my favorites things. Also I am re-reading Macbeth for class and then I'll pick up my son and go see my mom so it couldn't get any better.

I've got a week off with some stuff to do, but lots of time for reading. And I saw a kingfisher twice on Monday. Amazing blue, and we're only a hundred metres from a major road to Birmingham.

I'm lying on the couch wearing comfy jammies and reading "Home Game" by Michael Lewis, which is hysterical. We wrote for twenty minutes or so in my 8th period, scary stories. The kids loved it. We read some of them aloud. They felt successful, and so did I. :)

I'm dog-sitting for my boss again, but I rather enjoy it. I'm not keen on animals generally, but this is a very sweet animal who just love to curl up against me while I get on with work - most relaxing.

Everyone does sound cheery Great idea for a thread, Fifth. I'm an unfortunate slave to complaining, even though I know it's pretty useless. This is a refreshing change.

It's half term for me too Paul, so that's a reason to be cheery :yesnod:. I'm feeling quite pleased as I've finally got some trees cut down in the garden which have been bugging me for ages. I had a new fence put up too, which was decimated in recent gales, so two more jobs ticked off my very long list of jobs to get done. I'm in the middle of painting my kitchen at the moment, so that's a drag, but on the positive side it's looking better, and the bulk of it is done, so I'm putting my positive hat on and saying almost there . And it's my birthday tomorrow, although I don't know if that's something to be cheery about.......it could go either way couldn't it, I could be in a slough of despond about ageing :(, or I could look at it in a better way and hit the bottle, (in a good way :brow:).

can bosses just get their employees to dog-sit, I need to be a boss, nobody will dog-sit for me...
anyway I am happy about the same thing as yesterday, rain, coffee and books. Also I recently started watching Torchwood so I am always trying to finish all my school work so I can spend the evening with Captain Jack and the rest.

A seven month old male Cocker Spaniel named Dennis. Utterly adorable and cuddly, if a little bitey...

It's a quid pro quo - I occasionally look after the dog, he let's me get on with my work in peace. And, I would offer to dog-sit for you, but I fear it would be too far a commute, much as I would love to do it!

maybe you wouldn't say that if you met them, they bark a lot and my older one is not very fond of guys, also they are very hairy and if people come wearing black clothes they leave white.
but this being a cheery thread I will add that they are very sweet and protective and lovely and I don't want to be without them!

:D It's great to see so many cheery people around. I am a bit tired today, but am cheerful because I had my performance review and slamdunked a superior rating despite having a bit of a tough year. This means I've scored nothing less than a superior rating now for about 5 years. That's some achievement.
I also got to go for lunch with my hubby and kids today and even though we went to McDonalds it was really, really nice to see them all.
It's been a good day.
I think I've earned myself a nice glass of wine :)

After an entire day where I have to hide who I am and meekly try to please terrifying and humourless people in business clothes who take themselves way too seriously, there's nothing like coming home, getting baked and watching Penn and Teller in my most comfortable lounge chair with every pillow and blanket that I own.

While on the topic of cheery, humans have a full range of emotions, and it's important to embrace all of them, embrace all emotions as if they were puppies, and then before you know it - you're cheery again - especially if you think of puppies. It's just as fine to be sad as any other emotion. We wouldn't be human otherwise.

Bread (toasted and generously buttered), slices of a perfect soft-boiled double-yolked egg... black pepper... touch of cinnamon... and a very light sprinkle of table cream on it all.
A steaming mug of dark coffee to contrast all that cold creaminess, and to complete the evening.
I deserve these delights in life every once in a while.
There's a Brett Dennen song that always adds a strange shrugging smile to my bad days. So I'm humming this one again today, and being happy.

I think it's the opposite. A lot of people are really happy but they don't realize it.
I read in Buddhist literature that if you're happy but lack awareness of the fact then you're happy, then you're happy and don't know it, and that made a lot of sense to me.
You have no reason to be happy you say... but you can read and write. I assume you have vision since apparently you typed this post. Apparently you aren't scrubbing floors 24/7 like Cinderella if you can come to the computer.
If you look back in history 150 years, even the wealthiest people didn't have nice shampoo for their hair... or a shower.
I don't know why, but shampoo always makes me cheery.
Anyway, I think the first part of your post is your natural state. :)

It's for days like this that I love living here. I went outside and leaned on my door this morning, and it felt like 100 degrees. It was still cool then but now it's around 70, just perfect! The last two or three days were overcast and raining, and cold, but today there's not a cloud in the sky.
