A balloon bumbling along in the wind, followed the quick pace of the footsteps dragging it along. It's red latex exterior stretched tightly with only a thin transparent barrier holding it together. Just barely visible to the occasional passerby, a golden cricket, the size of a quarter but of much more value, lay motionless. This silent Buddha would let out an occasional chirp to inform the universe of his existence, but would quickly drift back into a meditative lucid trance and remain silent. The balloon clung to the grimy hand as it ducked under picket signs, politely navigated through crowds of screaming rioters and avoided the cursing batons of the enforcers. Each building the boy scurried by was vandalized and tagged with images of a white willow tree, another symbol of the many rebellions. The boy momentarily glanced back down the street with a deep innocent stare, too familiar with the pungent stench and the fearful expressions that fell around him like dead pines. Tear gas had begun to socialize the crowd and rubber bullets kissed their cheeks leaving ruby red lips passionately smothered in the dust. The boys attention was suddenly snatched forward as a Molotov cocktail crashed and splashed a fiery hell upon him. He smiled a final goodbye as he watched the red balloon slip off into the blackened sky.

Joy must be the name of the child?

Mmm some snippets of imagery. I haven't quite joined the dots buts that's probably more about me having a sleepless night than anything else. I like the balloon travelling in the the grimy hand of a child and if I read it wrong - well I still like the image anyway!

I ended it rather shortly, and I'm not sure if I like it at all. I'd appreciate any input.

A series of good images that eventually string together. Have you seen the movie "Flight of the Red Balloon" - it's kind of like that, beautiful but you have to piece it together to uncover any real meaning. Of course, the story takes shape towards the end, but I will agree that it ends a bit abruptly, and I don't think the ending has the power you want it to have.
