As the helmet rolls to a stop, the world cares.
A tiny tear on the surface of something otherwise brilliant.

The crash they longed for, now outraged with heartache.

Every stranded wheel and broken bone,
Emblazoned in headlines and outcries from the occasional follower.

The men who were absent for the moment of triumph.

As warriors diced to bring victory and pride,
A single voice championed their battle to unbothered editors.

Two lines at the bottom of the page, squashed beneath footballer’s affairs.

And then our believers questioned its fairness,
Digging beneath the rainbow for a reason in the pot of gold.

Holding the shoulders of comrades, consoling their loss.

The glory hunters amplify each spark and cry,
Sensational anguish for the fallen men they never knew.

Flying the flag of expertise for a cause they know nothing about.

Then yesterday’s papers blow into the wind,
Sweeping their talent and vigour and strength under the carpet.

And those who really loved are left to grieve.

Gosh! I kept reading something different into each line there. What timeframe was I in - bygone battles, faith in God, media propaganda and the solitary final line. What a vivid journey!

Thank you. I don't know if it helps to give you some context, but I wrote it this morning following the news that MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli had been killed in a racing accident. I work in motorsport and the pain that our industry has injured this week with the deaths of Dan Wheldon and now Simoncelli has been immense. It upsets me so much that the world only cares about something awful happens, so the injustice was an ode both to the loss of their lives and to the representation of motorsport as a whole.

Not sure whether that explanation enhances the poem or ruins its enigmatic nature!!

lol. I've looked beyond the meaning of some poetry and appreciated the crafting of the piece more.

Whilst I would not wish to decry your requiem for those who die in motorsport, certain of the words employed had a much more martial timbre. The poem took me in a more warlike direction. It is very well realised. Welcome to the forum.

Thank you Hawkman, reading back it could almost be a military poem. Maybe it says more about the way we value life and service than I first realised. My motive was motorsport, for many others it could be an ode to those who risk their lives to defend our countries. Thanks for your comments :-)

Although vague as to the overall meaning, the last line gives this poem a lot of strength. I know how Delta could have said that the meaning varied so much. It's indeed a condensed epic.

Do you think the variety is a positive thing, or does it say too much without actually saying anything?
