Is there anyway to moderate threads that are completely irrelevant? There have been a string of them lately and it really throws the tone of the forum off. I find it somewhat frustrating to go to serious discussion and find all these threads that lack any coherent structure or relevance.

I understand your frustration; however, it is not for us to decide which threads are "relevant" and which are not.

As it is stated in the rules by the all-mighty Serious Cat:

- Serious cat does not define if discussion is serious.

- Moderators do not define if discussion is serious.

- Only posters define if discussion is serious, by posting here.

- If you think someone's thread not serious enough, do not complain to Serious Cat. The almighty Serious Cat will not listen to your pleas.

- Just because you don't think thread serious enough, does not mean it not serious to other poster. You just ignore if you don't like.

- Serious Cat reminds you, no politics!

Serious Cat makes serious sense.

Serious Cat makes serious sense.

In any other situation an omnipresent cat who is established as "all-mighty" ruler and discourages politics would seem quite dystopian. Here, it makes sense.

I don't understand. What's the difference between here and there?

The difference is that "here" is a free website owned by the Admin, who takes the full responsibility for its continuity and maintenance, which, I can assure you, is not an easy task.

It is by no means a democracy; we are here as Admin's guests and we can at least respect the rules put in places as they obviously aim to make this Forum an agreeable place for us all. If you feel that any rule aims to belittle or put anyone in disadvantage in any way, please let us know so that we can discuss your concerns.

Fair point...I was more just trying to picture a society run by what I imagine to be an over-sized cat.

An oversized cat? I don't quite understand again. Obese? Ginness record? I don't see anything of the kind around here.

My point is that there are things we can do in the community to redirect non-sense, whether it be in the form of trolling, immature comments, or group therapy sessions. You can ignore such threads, which is a drag since the potential to have a decent conversation is often prevalent. But I am tired of having to ignoring threads that could have potentially good conversations. (It is a habit of mine to push for the potential to become reality- job hazard.)

I think it is a good idea to pull down the OP's post to remind people what they were originally were talking about. Stuff like that..

I'll be honest, this is the best site out there as far as literary forums go. It must be an incredible amount of work to maintain this site. I think many people are grateful for the opportunity to be here. I know I am. But there are people who just make a mess of everything they touch. Why should this site fall victim to such predators?

If threads get derailed, we often post reminders. However, it is not for us to determine what constitutes "good conversation"; it changes from one person to the other, no doubt.

However, if you feel particular members trolling or derailing discussions regularly, you can always add them to your ignore list so that you don't have to read their posts/comments.

I get that. I just couldn't help myself from the obvious smartass comment that I was surprised wasn't made yet. You had to of seen it coming. :)

I understand that one person cannot define what is relevant or not. I truly get that point and I agree that people have differences in opinions, ideas, etc. You summed it up for me, it's the trolling and derailing that is hard to by pass. I have used the ignore button and it does work. I also have seen the warnings- I think those are very helpful. Sometimes people have even come on and facilitated the conversations back to something coherent. To me, that is the best way to get things refreshed.

There you go. Serious cat is indeed smiling benignly upon all of us.
