This film is so great that it leaves practically everything else, except for a handful of rare examples, as pathetic also rans. I had the privilege of meeting Joseph Cotton briefly at the National Film theatre in London; his performance in this scene reflects the mastery of the greatest film ever made even though the quality of the video extract is far from perfect.

Now there's one that's near and dear to my heart, being a Wallace myself (through his brother we believe). Thought the soundtrack was even better than the movie. I saw a documentary on WW recently on the History Channel. He stormed one of the English occupied castles with something like 18 men. Talk about kahoonas...

That scene was good, but I think I prefer the end and the throwing of the sword. "In the year of our Lord, 1314, patriots of Scotland, starving and outnumbered, charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets. They fought like Scotsmen. And won their freedom."

Brilliant scene, and Daniel Day Lewis's acting is so nuanced and in a class of it's own. His accent (similiar to gangs of new york, the movie) is carefully researched to find the accent that was American at that time). It's the little things that people are not going to pick up that he probably spent hundreds of hours working on.

Perhaps rubbish is a little harsh and while those that I have seen from the list you have given were mildly entertaining they didn't go beyond that.
The hyperbole surrounding the others was such that I automatically relegated them to the file marked meretricious. It is a word that has various connotations such as:

flashy, garish, gaudy, gimcrack, tawdry, trashy, brassy, cheap, loud, tacky.

This scene is from a story that is itself part of a compendium of horror stories held within the framework of an overarching story that has a remarkable twist ending. It is a film that doesn't contain any monsters, aliens, schlock horror effects, unnecessary violence, foul language, drugs, pseudo philosophy or any of the other scams designed to relieve the gullible of their money and yet it achieves its aim in being both a disturbing and clever piece of film making.

In both cases the violence was a necessary part of the story rather than its gratuitous use to provide a cheap thrill for the gullible.
Here is a scene in which violence is of the essence and therefore not gratuitous.
It depicts an actual event and was filmed by possibly the greatest director in the history of cinema. Even though it was made under the auspices of the state and might therefore be questionable, it remains possibly the most famous scene ever filmed. The music, incidentally, has been added by the video poster and is from Shostakovitch's 5th symphony.

It's not the ending but a montage of shots from the film in non chronological order. Not one Fellini's best despite all the ballyhoo surrounding it. The symbolism is a bit too obvious. Perhaps that was the reason for its success.

Hey Emil, I would not say the ending of La Dolce Vita is obvious - it would take a bit of thinking to know what is sybolised by the girl and the main character on the beach. And Madonna being carried throught the city? Obvious to intellectuals, but the average person would take longer than a weeks worth of Facebook postings to figure it out.

In terms of popularity, the average Italian wouldn't watch this if it meant Italy winning the world cup. Same with 8 1/2 - it's considered way high brow for the middling classes.
