Trying to make a difference
is like slowly climbing a steep hill
on a rickety old tram
that should have derailed years ago.
When everyone was infused
with the Red Terror
and I Love Lucy hadn't reached
repeat status,
the tram didn't wobble
or sound like clattering bones.
Now, as it creaks and groans
using what little oomph it has left,
I'm tempted to leap off
before I reach the crescendo
of my own destiny
but I fear the downhill
tumble of roly poly powerlessness
will make a deeper impression
than anything else I ever did.
I would miss the flaming sunset
and lament how looking back
never righted the wrongs of history.
So I remain enroute wondering
whether I'll ever know if the fare was worth it.
